Irene strengthened pretty quickly, yesterday afternoon when i checked, winds were around 50mph, today they're at 75 for cat 1 strength, good to see it heading more east, hopefully it will only graze most of florida and make lanfall in georgia or the carolinas, or even not make direct landfall at all.

It's the ones that are full strength by the time they reach the Caribbean, and stay just a little north of Hispanola. Those I do not like. Actually, we could use a nice tropical storm or category 1 to knock all the dead stuff out of the pine trees. That makes forest fire season far more bearable once that rolls around again. In the meantime, we're all ready for whatever. My generator is freshened for the season, and I keep various backups of several years of magazine files in a few redundant locations. And some Spam. But that's more because Spam is awesome and not because of hurricanes. jg

This just made me REALLY not want to move to Florida.

Honestly, aside from the rare storm like Andrew and Katrina.. most storms are not catagory 5+ and do not do more than some flooding, wind damage, and erosion. Florida is pretty well prepared for such things.

Can always move to Key West.. most storms seem to miss that island

Cost of living in Key West is insane. Falling down 800sf houses sell for 800,000.00. Food costs are 25% higher than Miami, the most expensive water in the US. A great place to visit (and I mean it!), but you don't want to live there. Population is a bit strange, too. But, Captain Tony's rocks.

Lates advisory has her aimed a bit east. Still expected to be a CAT2, so we will get some strong winds and rain, but should not be Biblical. I really don't want to lose comms. GRM should be a bit better off, if all holds.

cwh - Not doing any "real" traveling, just Sandals Montego Bay, Jamaica.

I suggest you go to any other Sandals. On Jamaica you really should not leave the compound. You will notice 12' fences topped with razor ribbon. Not there to keep YOU in. That is not a nice place. Beautiful, for sure, but too many problems with poverty and crime. And the north coast where Sandals is, is MUCH safer than Kingston. But if you go, take a ride up Fern Gully Road. Incredibly beautiful, all curves.

Z31- I see they have a location in St. Lucia. Drop dead gorgeous place, safe to walk around, outside is not expensive, and they actually LIKE Americans! I have customers there, so I have a bit of local knowledge.

Hehe, already booked for the week of thanksgiving. Something like 65% off what is normally a VERY expensive place to stay.

I don't think the wife is wanting to do much more than sit on the beach and get boozed up.

We are definitely aware about the Kingston area. Will be my first time going to Jamaica, but the wifes 6th or 7th.

As long as you stay in the compound you will be safe. Me, when I travel, I like to go exploring. That gets dangerous in Jamaica.

I usually do as well, but I picked our roadtrip and assorted activities earlier in the year, so she got to choose this one.

And here's to hoping the storm misses you folks!

Right now, it appears that the Bahamas are going to get hammered, and SoFla is going to get some strong winds. It's a big storm, and is expected to be a CAT3 soon. We will have trees down, some building damage, power and comms down for a while, but nowhere near what a direct hit by a CAT3 would do. Farther north, as in Margie's back yard, might not fare as well. Time for some prayers, and I'm not a religious guy.

It is more likely he will be in Daytona. Not kidding. Possibly in Nassau, but I don't think they send him to other countries. In my area? Adios MF.

Models are trending eastward, so we might squeeze out of this one. GFS has it drawing a bead up the coast to NYC, though. This one could be messy--let's hope it stays well out to sea.

We are currently getting some rain and wind, nothing serious. Probably will blow more this afternoon/ evening. Looks bad for the outer banks. Might even go as far as NYC. You ready, Wally? That sucker is 400 miles across!

Looks like Wilmington will get clobbered yet again, that's what, 5 big 'uns in 10 years? along with the Outer Banks.

How do you feel about volcanoes?

Move to Maine. You do get hurricanes up here, but it's pretty rare compared to the southern part of the east coast.

Hey now! My shop-teacher glasses get used in my shop!

Mind you, we are theoretically (over)due for a serious earthquake, so there is the possibility of being the victim of something other than fashion here.

Weather radar shows Ft. Lauderdale under the outlying bands now. Heavy rains, a few gusts, no adventures. Nassau, New Providence island, is getting it hard. No power on the island, roofs blowing off.

looks like we are in for it.. most of the tracks show it going WEST of here.. which puts Atlantic City to the east and in the worst of the storm. I am probably going to spend a few days at work where it is safe (and I can get paid rate to make beds)
