Leave the winter dull of Indiana or Illinois and fly to Vegas. After a couple days in Vegas, grab a $10 per day car and spend the rest of the week driving home via a southern route. Do not pick up or drop off at airports, rather choose what Hertz calls HLEs (Hertz Local Editions) and that way you will avoid the tourist taxes and fees.
I have seen Hertz do this type of thing before to get cars out of Florida after Winter Break.
Damn nowhere close for me.
If you're vaccinated and a New Englander, this is the perfect vacation chance. Jump on a flight to LA or San Diego, take a leisurely drive to NC or DC, and then take the Acela home.
Great time for someone wanting to do a fly-and-drive and still stay away from the crowds.
Sweet, thanks for sharing John.
I missed a connection flight at Sky Harbor (Arizona) a couple of years ago and American Airlines wouldn't do squat to help me because it was due to weather.
All they'd do is fly me to LAX the next afternoon (my car was at Burbank)...no hotel room, no transport to Burbank, nothin'.
I called Avis and...
Avis - "we're going into our off season so we'll rent you anything on our lot for $7.99 if you drop it off out of state."
Me - "what's the fastest thing you've got?"
Avis - "Sir, that would be our 370Z"
Me - "bring it around, I'll be there in ten minutes."
Drove through the middle of the night doing a buck twenty in places and was in my bed in Ventura 5.5 hours later - good times, good times.

Cannonball!
Right on my friend.
A bonus of the journey was that I learned to never, ever, ever trust rental car tires.
I took a major, four lane off ramp a few miles away from the airport to stop by a Quickie Mart and load up on a balder busting 52 oz diet coke to keep me alert on the trip home.
Fortunately, I picked the inner most lane so I had enough real estate to four-point drift across my lane, the next lane, and a some of the shoulder before getting everything sorted.
At least I was able to enjoy the very nicely done mosaic stone Native American art that adorned the underpass embankment as I was headed straight at it.
Added later...
Ops, that probably wasn't a reply, rather a call for a future event - never mind.

If I was vaccinated I'd already be on a plane west. I'd rent something tolerable for a month and meander my way back east. Not exactly the best time of year to do it, but at that price I'll make the compromise.

I was mildly interested, but now I'm intrigued.
Rats, if only it was the opposite. I'd drive out to CA and buy something that won't pass smog there.
Start in LA and take route 66 to Illinois.
