Anybody have any REAL knowledge about these? What I read makes them sound like a pretty good unit for a low price, but there are also people out there that can't stand anything High Point. One guy put a 3/8 inch bolt into the barrel, fired it, and got very upset that it got berkeleyed up. Intelligent input, guys, please.
Its a cheap gangster gun. If you want higher quality for the same price, go Kel-Tec. Rebel can probably go into detail.
My friend has a Hi Point 9mm carbine. We have fired a ton of rounds thru it and it has never had a problem at all. I mean I wouldn't use it for home defense or hunting but it is fun to just shot.

Don't even bother.......you might as well invest in trees to make pointy sticks out of. Hipoints are warrantied for life, but you will use it......and expect hipoint to have your firearm for more time than you do.
Save up more and buy something nicer.
Kel-tec doesn't make the sub2k in .45, as a matter of fact the hi-point Is the only .45 carbine I know of.

I think this is a fair description. They may fire thousands of rounds, they may not. Not reliable.

Marlin made the Camp 45.....took 1911 magazines. AFAIK, they haven't been made in some time.

Sorry. Hadn't read slow enough. Didn't see you we're talking carbine. Same story. I know Beretta makes a 9mm carbine, maybe they do .45 as well. That would be reliable.

I wouldn't bother with a .45 carbine....ammo is too salty
I have one of the early 9mm carbines and love it.
These guns are really too cheap, but they are better than say a Jimenez or the like. Mine has never failed, and I shoot it more than any other I have. Go figure. Very accurate, too, say to 50 yards or so.
If you want to feel like an aristocrat you can get the Storm, they are definitely cool, but shot for shot I would doubt the Storm will beat the HiPoint for feed failures or accuracy. Ergonomics, yes. The Hi-Point is one step up from a prison gun. I put the aftermarket stock on mine, it sort of mimics the Storm look. There used to be some side by side shooting reports on these (Hi-Point and Beretta) along with the Kel-Tec, on-line that make interesting reading.

The Beretta CX4 storm is a much better carbine. If you just want a plinker, get the Highpoint.

I've shot the hipoints in 9 and 40 cal, the camp marlin, and a few others. I still think my m1 carbine is still a better shooter. Heck, my .45 colt lever gun is nicer to shoot and more accurate than the hipoint carbines.
Are you stuck on it being a .45ACP carbine? If so the Marlin mentioned above is your best bet. Taurus had plans for a real nice modern carbine in .45 though nothing ever came of it. As mentioned the Beretta is an option but kinda spendy and limited to 10 round mags.
Lone Wolf is working on a .45 variant of their G9 AR platform carbines that use Glock magazines. I have thought about one of the 9mm ones to match my Glock 17. Currently they are running 9mm, .357 SIG, .40SW and .45 GAP. Supposedly the 10mm and .45 ACP are still on their way. There are some other .45 ACP AR platforms out there that you can build up as well. This is of course not going to be an inexpensive option. There are several out there that use old grease gun mags.
As rebel has mentioned the 9mm is a viable option. St Louis city uses the Beretta Storm and has been very happy with it. Any 9mm rebel would suggest, I'm sure would rival the Storm. A 9mm jacketed hollow point going down a barrel at that length should do plenty of damage.
You never mentioned what the use was. Home defense? Fun?

In reply to N Sperlo:
should be at least 3-400fps difference between a 4.5" barrel and 16" barrel for .45acp. So instead of 900fps, 12-1300fps should be the norm.
The general consensus I get from reading things owners have written is Hipoints are sort of the AK of pistols and carbines, cheap, clunky, but reliable and durable. Like anything, it will break and/or bite you given enough abuse. Treat it like a real gun and it will perform like one, treat it like garbage, it might work like garbage.
I don't think anyone has yet mentioned the Ruger police carbine, though I believe it was only offered in 9mm and .40S&W, and discontinued in 2007.

That is an insult to AK's comparing them to a Hi Point. Every Hi Point I have have handled was a rough, poorly balanced, lousy shooter. Then again I have fairly high standards but still enjoy the "simple things" when it comes to guns.
Honestly if you are going for a more inexpensive "plinker" that can be used for defense go with the Kel Tec and change your cartridge choice. Most of the .45 carbines are going to be outside the "budget" side of things, UZI's, HK's, the Beretta, AR carbines, Thompsons etc...
If I recall, the Storm can be had in .40 S&W... which with the right loads can do damn near everything .45 ACP can.

I personally dispute that claim.....the .40 was designed to bridge the gap between 9mm and .45, the 10mm came close however(.40 cal magnum basically)
Conversely, the .357sig came from the .40, and it is a superior caliber to the .40.

.40 S&W can nearly match the .45's muzzle velocity and energy, and exceeds the .45's Marshall and Sanow one-shot-stop percentage. While those aren't pefect comparisons, it's certainly not a baseless claim to make.
Also, the .40S&W was designed because of the 10mm Lite, not to bridge some .45 ACP gap.
I don't have any information on the .357 Sig, so I cannot make claims, though I'm interested to see your sources.

Did marshall and sanow mention the .40 round fragments? Otherwise, I wonder why many departments are leaving the .40 to use the more expensive .357sig round instead. 2 departments local to me went back to .45 after 6 years.
Edit: Most of what I know comes from ballistics testing I've done side by side with different calibers. The .40 is a lethal round, just like the rest, I just don't see it or .45 as "god's gift to the world" Which is why caliber debates are never solved, and never stop.
.357 sig is a .40sw case necked down to 9mm, velocities and energy slightly less, but rivaling .357mag. It has a unique characteristic of being the only round available in a small frame glock that has armor penatrating capability. Windshields, car doors, flack jackets, lesser ballistic vests, etc.

The data I've seen was basically "gather a bunch of police reports, see how often one round of x caliber stopped a guy." .40 S&W therefor has documented better stopping power than the .45 ACP. The statistics aren't perfect of course; maybe .40 S&W is easier to shoot accurately, maybe better shooters prefer .40 S&W, etc. Still the result is the .40 "Short and Weak" puts guys on the ground, and better than the .45 ACP.

Too much reliance on marksmanship abilities of officers.....40 is decently accurate though. I can't shoot a G21 .45 worth a E36 M3 though.
