I never understood a car company releasing a vehicle with a manual transmission and no tachometer. WTF? I guess they make cars for people that, when pulling away from a stop sign, like to be in second gear before completely crossing the cross walk.

My boss had one back in the day. Drove it on at least one occasion. I think it was a 2.0-liter. With an automatic. I remember it was slow. Impressively slow. Makes good reliable transportation, though.

It's got enough torque below tachometer missing RPM that while normal driving it drives like a dodge neon or something similar in size/weight with a 2L.
If you go to full throttle..... yeah it's really slow.

I just recall (relatively gentle) hills on the interstate where you'd keep pushing the gas pedal down, down, down, and the car would go slower, slower, slower.

There's a really big hill on interstate 71/75 on the Kentucky side as you're leaving Cincinnati. Terminal velocity in 5th gear / wide open throttle was 50mph, but I was still passing tractor trailers and stuff. More gentle hills are no problem. I guess the 5 speed is a bit better than the automatic!
So, now that i've disassembled most of the car in an attempt to locate the horn relay, anyone have any idea where it might be? It doesn't seem to be in the relay box under the hood, or under the dashboard, or under either side kick panel. I'm stumped here, help me out!

my '85 tercel required a downshift to 4th to pass on the 60mph portions of the HW... and in 5th would just barley maintain those speeds as I recall... def an OD gear for MPG
Factory horn wiring is fired. Hooked a pair of $10 harbor freight horns up with a relay to the stock horn button. It wakes the dead now!

Joey
Joey, slow your roll. Calling someone a noob is not OK in this neighborhood. Being a "new reader" is bad enough.

Depends. Certain words trigger different censor words...
You would be happier putting that big sway bar on the rear. Probably easier to do also. Helps reduce understeer

I love those hills. Out in WV on my way back from KY one year I had my big wagon, wife, kids, coffee table couple CRT computer monitors, a weeks worth of luggage, and a bunch more crap (and nothing intruded on my rear view) I was attempting to do the speed limit in the fast lane. Had a guy in a G20 in front of me going 15 under.... He finally got over and I went by. Few hills later he pulls up, downshifts and takes off. (going uphill) I let him get half a car, floored it and blew by him then went back to the speed limit. He never came near me again.
Back on topic.... The 80s cars, as boxy as they are still look better than todays stuff. I was just looking at the concept car thread.... and was looking at the V steering wheels....And there the old toy has one....Ah the 80's.....

Toyota took the view that (in the US at least), the only reason for anyone to buy a car with a manual transmission was because they couldn't afford an automatic, so the manual transmission cars tended to be strippers.
IIRC, at one point you could only get a tach if you also purchased an automatic transmission.

I had an 85 5 speed back in the day and got a ticket for 79 in a 70 in Dickson Co. TN, on the same trip I maxed the speedo out on a down hill in KY. Top speed on level ground was about 90.
