Let's just go back to "Hungary Bill is a hero, and thank God for those able and willing to receive refugees."
War sucks and these poor people are displaced from their homes and separated from their loved ones all because of one man's ridiculous ego trip.
Absolutely. Since he is close to the ground, that's why I'm waiting to see what he can suggest for us to be able to put our dollars to work in a good way.

I am as well. My denomination has asked for help giving more to missionaries we have there (we typically fund our missionaries without them acting as fundraisers) but I am curious what HB thinks of their effectiveness.

EDX is now cutting out the Russians
Dear Learner,
Like much of the world, we are deeply troubled by the Russian government’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in violation of Ukraine’s national sovereignty.
For that reason and until further notice, new learners will be unable to enroll in course content offered by Russian universities on edX, and that course content will no longer be listed on edX.org.
We intend to support all learners who are currently enrolled in courses and programs offered by these institutions, and we are hopeful that these universities will continue to allow current learners to complete their work. As a currently enrolled learner, we are working to ensure you can still access your courses and resume progress from your edX course dashboard.
For technical assistance, please contact edX Support.
Thank you,
Anant Agarwal
You guys are relentless and I love it.
Ok. We just missed one that GRM would have been a great fit for (A town wanted to install 15 heat pumps in a closed school, and convert it into a shelter for 45 refugees) but I promise that when I find another opportunity, I will jump on it and post it here.
Tuna: Regarding missionaries, I'm not affiliated with the church so I can't speak to the internal dynamics/cost efficiencies/etc, but every missionary member I've ever met on the front lines was nothing but organized, effective, and helpful. I think it's a good way to go.

Someone asked for reputable places to donate. The two MAIN places that people are working with locally are the Red Cross (VorosKereszt), and The Order of Malta. Both are well organized and have boots on the ground at the border.
FYI all looking to donate - this got buried in the middle of a response two pages ago.
I did not realize how heavy the censorship campaign is in Russia. Radio and Television stations shut down mid broadcast, it's now a criminal act to speak of the war publicly.

Supposedly the latest joke in Russia is that Tolstoy's book is called "Special Operations and Peace".

Wow. I don't know about Kentucky's laws, but my state's employee retirement program is not allowed to own foreign investments like that.

Seems that may be false.

Article says they sold Feb 23 for a loss of 3.2 million but recieved 3 million in dividends while owning the stock. Total portfolio is ~26 billion.
I read an interesting post today - a woman in the US figured out how to contact a bed and breakfast over there, and made some reservations for use by refugees. The person at the B&B said they were already housing people for no charge, but the money from this woman was a big help.

Oof.

Jesus I hope that is bad information. Kentucky state teachers are VERY poorly compensated and some numb nutz investor bet the farm on a russian bank? WTF. Seriously, my dad is a retired schoolteacher in Ohio so this is close to home literally and figuratively.

A handful of my buddies paid for airbnb's there as a way to get money directly to the right people that need it. Love the grassroots effort. Would also be down for a Hungary Bill GoFundMe or cash VenmoPaypal whatever aong with most of the folks on the thread.

Off topic but I highly suggest you read an old book call "revolution in world missions" it's by KP yohanon I believe. It's been 20 years since I've read it but it left quite an impression.

I mean, I get it, but on the other hand it's probably managed by an investment bank that's following some set diversification strategy. This % on this kind of thing type stuff and noone really saw this level of diarrhea sandwich coming.
Without going into details, I have a managed investment that I am beneficiary of, but with limited control and I have a job, that for reasons, I would suffer professional difficulties if it invests in certain companies /market segments. I have to remind them 2x a year that certain things are a no-go.

I have friends in the check republic that own a bed and breakfast. They are full of refugees, and the whole village has pitched in to help the best they can
Good humans are everywhere. They just don't get press.
a few pages back there was discussion about whether the An-225 was indeed destroyed or not. In case nobody answered the question definitively, here's a definitive answer:

Incidentally, the following is a really well-researched site documenting individual equipment losses based on analysis of photos, videos, and other visual reports (you can click on each piece of lost equipment and actually see a photo/vid of it). I'm sure there are some mistakes and fakes/old shots from prior Russian invasions of other countries, but overall looks to be mostly correct equipment based on what is confirmed being used in the region. Tough to tell, but better-documented than most of the other places on the web that just throw out numbers wiht no evidence whatsoever.

So, Oligarch yachts are being seized but what is the secondary market on these types of boats? Especially if you can't sell it to another Russian Oligarch?

We should fit em with gunzzzz and point em at the Russian navy. If nothing else it would be fun to watch the chaos.

Save a couple of them for future James Bond movies. They could be used as the bad guy's yacht that gets blown up at the end.

There are no fakes on that site. The site tracks equipment losses in all sorts of conflicts and only lists equipment with photos that have have the raw data for geolocation and date. They are VERY professional and arms experts.

Do any of you guys also think there is so little purpose to a yacht you think they should all be banned?

Dude, that website is cool. And they've captured more tanks than they've even destroyed! Nuts!
The Independent reports Putin continues to loose commanders. Putin has ordered bombings of cities now:

The Duma is now beginning to learn about how many losses of young men are occuring in Ukraine:

Honestly, r/UkrainianConflict seems to be avoiding a lot of the echo chamber problems reddit seems to have.

I certainly wasn't saying that it's widespread, nor intentional - but anyone in the intelligence world who says they have 100% confidence in analysis of a large body of data like that is either lying or a fool, or both. It's not that hard to manipulate image metadata, and there are a lot of hacktivists playing both sides of this conflict - so while I thnk most data on there is indeed accurate, it's impossible to rule out the possibility that a subset of it is not, regardless of the expertise of the analysts. Intel 101.
All that said, there's a reason I look at that site - because I consider it to be the most accurate one around in the open-source world for this sort of thing.

I'd bet a lot of the captured vehicles likely result from poor supply line management, where they're running out of fuel and are left behind, or broken down mechanically, or stuck in the poor surface conditions in many areas of Ukraine this time of year (seen quite a few vehicles that were simply stuck in the mud). Plus the widely-reported instances of vehicle crews simply ditching them and melting into the woods so as not to end their lives at the tip of a Javelin, or simply because they don't want to fight.
Unfortunately, if there are two things Russia has a lot of, it's oil....and massive numbers of military vehicles (granted, it's almost amusing seeing how "vintage" a lot of that crap they're sending in actually is....)
