If he did use WMDs, how do we respond without the world ending?

I would think a SF op that takes Putin out might be a good call, but I suspect it might more be a "shock and awe" of complete military domination via air power.

We use a modern version of the star wars system. Too bad we don't have one. I explained that idea to my kids, that if Russia launched all 4,500 warheads at once, and we incredibly shot down 75% of them, we all still die. We need a laser based system that can operate at a speed (186,000 mps) which makes a hypersonic missile look like it's standing still. It could take thousands of shots at the same missile while en route. Something like that makes an ICBM obsolete and could end MAD. If I invented such a thing, I would probably give them away to every country on every continent and help install them.

I'm guessing The World lets the Russian public know a sizeable percentage of them are about to get turned into radioactive ash unless they change leadership right quick....

A concern about the use of a tactical nuke in Ukraine would be the automated defense systems located in other countries with nukes - including Russia itself, given what we have been learning about overall preparedness and system maintenance.  That would not end well.

I suppose the saving grace may be while Putin can give the order to launch, he wouldn't be the one pushing the literal launch buttons.  So there would be some hope in someone in the middle saying, "hold on here... this may be a step too far."

I think that the air campaign would be mostly likely but we would need to get to start talks with Russia quick because if he has already done it what would keep him from throwing a few more "small" nukes or chemical weapons are cities in Europe.

Speaking  of Star Wars, does anybody know if the X37B is still in orbit? Have any of NORAD's tracking assets been transferred to the Space Force?  What exactly do they do anyway?

I think it is. I do not think anyone has successfully probed what that thing is for. It could be pure science research, and it could be the next SR-71 or anything in between. I don't have high hopes that it's helpful, but I am jaded.

Some tidbits:

 - A Russian website posted, the quickly took down a casualty figure of 9600, more than they lost in the entire 10 years of Afghanistan, which they withdrew from because of the high loses.

 - Some Belarus official made a comment about train cars full of bodies leaving Belarus for Russia.  Some Russian mother are about to get deliveries...

About "forever Dictator" Putin.  As I understand it, he still does have a term of office, and that ends in 2024.  He has pulled some shenanigans to allow him to run for two more 6 year terms, but he still, technically has to be "elected".  Not that many people would want to run against him, but if this does go bad for him at home, there is an angle to remove him.

For all of the young ones out there, here is the closest we ever got to a missile defense system. They finished it and almost immediately decommissioned it.

Wikipedia: Safeguard Program

It was built in my home state of North Dakota to protect our two strategic air command air bases with their fleets of B-52H (20 cruise missiles ea. x 27 bombers = 540 nukes in Minot, ND alone) and B-1B nuclear bombers and 300 ICB Minuteman III missiles (900 nukes).

At least living 12 miles from one of the bases and having a missile silo 3 miles away from my lake cabin, I won't suffer very long since I've read that each missile silo is targeted by two Russian nukes and who knows how many for each airbase. Have a nice day. smiley

Well we do have missile defense systems. We have the GMB, THAAD, Aegis and Patriot systems which are all designed to intercept missiles of various sizes. The THAAD system had its first successful intercept in combat recently in the Middle East.

It wouldn't save use from a large scale attack though.

I still believe that some kind of compromise via peace talks are the most likely out come. Zelenskyy said today that they are continuing to progress as did the UN Secretary General.

The fact that both the Ukrainians and Russians have said that they are progressing as well as the Turks who have been heavily involved plus western intelligence and now the UN is what gives me hope.

Ukraine is going to win this war somehow.

If you are in construction or industrial projects, get your teams ready. They will be using this aid to rebuild the place and they will need help. I am not trying to downplay the loss of life nor even the loss of history, but it could bring a neat positive light to this poor country.

I hope you're right, although our teams are already at near burn-out pace on US projects.

Putin plans to attend G-20 summit despite calls to exclude him (yahoo.com)

Hopefully somebody with a stinger will be sitting along his route and pay him back for the MH17 downing.

Isn't there a tendency for coups to happen when a leader is out of the country?

I mean, just let him go to Indonesia without any protest. Just don't tell him that the other 19 countries decided to get together that week in London instead :0

Guess what this is:

Yes, that is a Russian artillery position NW or Irpin, as shot by a commercial satellite company... the Russians are not pleased, and may be attacking the websites of those companies.

Or, you know, you could hide your artillery a bit better.

Not sure I would want to be part of this unit, if it still exists.

Seems like a good target for the plethora of home made drones dropping explosives.  Especially the "obsolete" armor grenades with the 3d printed fins.   And by drones, I mean the 4 rotor kind, as well as the helicopter kind and the basic RC model plane.

Saw a thing about a tiny, tiny FPV drone used for military surveillance.  $95k for one.  Which is to say- there's a serious market out there for tiny military drones, if you are interested.
