In today's Sun Sentinel- Eighties rapper Vanilla Ice is back in the news, but not because of his music.

It seems the homeowner's association in the Versailles neighborhood in Wellington where he lives claims he is behind in his association fees. As a result the association has filed a foreclosure action.

The rapper, real name Robert Van Winkle, 44, is known for his hit, Ice, Ice, Baby.

They can take your house if you don't pay off the HOA?

Never thought I'd say this, but I hope Ice has a high priced lawyer on call who can rip them a new one.

I know they can put a lien agaist your property and than demand the property to go into foreclosure so that they can be paid..

Debts is debts, people! How exactly did he move into the neighborhood without knowledge and consent of the HOA and their fees? Sheesh. Slackers.

Yes, homestead states still allow them to foreclose on your house. Texas just enacted some laws to limit HOA power, but it's still scary what they can do.

F*ck an HOA. I'll watch property values rollercoaster before I will get into their clutches. OBTW: did you know that it is entirely possible for a credit card company to force a foreclosure on your house? http://www.bills.com/credit-card-debt-foreclosure/

Except it's unlikely to be a rollercoaster and more just a steady decline. Once a neighborhood starts to go, it's usually decades before they come back.

I think the avg homeowner stays in each house 7-9 years or something.

I don't have an HOA, but I sure do hate the slackers on my street that keep their property looking like crap.

HOA's don't mean squat. There's a house in my family, real nice n'hood, vicious HOA (dues ~$220/mo.) etc etc etc. The house was worth $415K just before the housing market correction, now it's worth $295k. Note balance is $315k. So it's $20k upside down. House right across the street just sold for $275k.

EDIT: HOA dues are $220 per quarter, not per month. But yeah if it keeps Vanilla Ice out, it might be worth it.

Now I'm worried that the video rental place might foreclose for that tape they claim I did not return in 1989!! I returned it and they still put me on the wall claiming I owed them $85 for this movie.

for those of you that have HOAs, do you feel like you get value for your money, or does it feel like you're lining the pockets of some maintenance company that just keeps jacking up their fees, which get passed directly to you?

my HOA has voted itself a raise two years running to the tune of a ~15% increase. when i moved in almost three years ago dues were 298/month, they've just gone up to 357, 8.5% increase after last years 7.3% increase. i'm beginnning to feel like the rate of these increases are going to further depress the already down values in our complex (townhome community).

I will never live in an HOA neighborhood.

I'd much rather flow like a harpoon daily and nightly.

I rent out a whole house with yard in a nice area for a little more than twice that.

We have an HOA, and it's our second house in the neighborhood. They raised our dues a year or so ago, but it was the first time in a while--like 10 years or so. Our HOA also maintains a community pool. I have never used it, but it does seem to be a popular attraction. They also handle the bike paths, medians, common areas, etc. I figure no one forced us to live here.

What I like and why I stay:

Seems like every single morning I see a crew cleaning up, trimming plants, doing maintenance, planting stuff, mowing medians, etc.

The HOA regularly repaves the bicycling/walking paths that crisscross through our neighborhood.

Home values have been rock-solid. Even with the "correction" my house is still worth more than I paid.

All of the homes were custom-built, so it's a unique neighborhood. I have a spiral staircase going from my living room to a loft. How cool is that?

Let's not start another HOA thread, it isn't good for my blood pressure.

I'll never live in one again, but I can say I "won" against the HOA where I used to live.

I, too, will never live in a HOA again. I, too, "won" against the last one. They sent me a letter about the MOVING VAN AND TRAILER IN FRONT OF MY BERKELEYING HOUSE AS I WAS MOVING OUT!!! I won by LEAVING. I don't care if my neighbors cook meth. They are ~1K ft away from me. They don't care how many cars I have or where they are parked or what color my house is.
