Does anyone have some ideas for a home security system that can be installed on a rental? My wife is concerned when I'm not at home and our dog isn't attentive enough to wake up reliably. Basically I'm looking to secure 6 windows and three doors. I've thought about some kind of camera setup she can check with her phone but I'm also looking for other ideas.
There is a lot of new stuff available wireless. As long as your wireless network is good, you're good. You can go as far as installing porch lights with cameras and microphones. When they detect an irregular situation they will alarm your phone. Understanding this is a rental, that may not be as good an option, but there should be more fitting options for you. I'll check with a friend and see if I can get brand names.
Here is some recent chatter in response to similar.

Standalone stick-on magentic door/window alarms, only downside is that you have to check the batteries once in a while.
The wireless ones that can send you alerts are good too, but putting one of those on each will get expensive fast.
if you can afford to feed them … a Rot, a Pitt, and a German Shepard …. maybe add a Doby to make a foursome
There are new cellular-based systems that are a complete kit in a box. You have a base station, motion alarms, window and door switches. You can add more as you go. I have no personal experience, but the idea seems sound and I think you can do it with no contract. This is the one that I saw an ad for:

FWIW - I have tripped over my sleeping pit coming home late at night.
I've been looking for something similar but more specifically for home surveillance stuff that's DIY and affordable, mostly I just want to move though. There's a lot of turnover-rental in our neighborhood, college kids and cheap rent. Our town was one of the major refugee centers post Katrina, a lot of the displaced nefarious types moved here and never went back. We've had a few incidents over the past few months that's really heightened our awareness and has SWMBO a little on edge.
I've not done a tremendous amount of research but want something like this, SANNCE 8CH Full 960H Video DVR comes with 4 decent cameras, expandable to add up to 4 more, add your own hard drive, has web and phone access, etc. Could have this up and running for <$200 with just the cameras it comes with.
you might want to post some that might make us think you're real … anymore of the above type and the decision will be made that you're a spammer .. and you'll be nuked … both of you posts to any threads are the same … coming in here and posting click bait ..
Is she comfortable and proficient with the use of a home defense item? If her concern is more for her own safety when you aren't home rather than the security of your stuff when neither of you are there she might me more confident if she knows how to defend herself.
Holding a cell phone waiting the 10-20 minutes for the police to arrive doesn't sound like a good time.

OK, security is my business. Not much in alarms, but try to stay up to date. Simply Safe is the best solution, in my opinion. Easy DIY installation, good rep for quality, easy to relocate, no contracts.
