Odd Q. what do people use for sanding walls before re-painting? I’ve got a large front room with older textured paint. I used to have a B&D ‘Mighty Mouse’ that was similar to their current line of ‘mouse’ sanders, but with probably twice the area of disc. They don’t seem to make those any more. What’s the best way of sanding that isn’t going to take forever? An orbital or what?

The easy button is probably to have a pro skim it.

I have harbor freight's 5" orbital palm sander and it works pretty well. I wouldn't want to do 4 big walls with it though

I'd be leary of an orbital leaving swirls

A pole sander. Or one of the fancy pole Sanders you hook a vacuum up to to minimize dust.

IT's a rough textured surface, I think I need a power sander rather than just a pole sander.

You should try scraping the paint first. A rough surface can be smoothed down some by scraping first and then sanding smooth. Less dust to clean up and the scrapings will be chips and not dust.

For large areas you want this. Expensive but you can probably rent one for the weekend.

It got me through 88 hotel rooms, I think it could handle a living room.

They make screens for them instead of paper, fine mesh, I think it's even called "drywall screen", does great for knocking down textures.

I have something called a sanding buddy or kleen sander or something in the garage, I'll look when I get the kiddo down for a nap. It's the vacuum sucking sander. But I'd send it up to you for shipping, as my refinishing days are done.

Never thought to try the mesh on paint, only used it for sanding plaster/drywall finishing. Good call. Busy tonight, I'll grab my regular pole and some mesh and try tomorrow.

thx

I usually give up 2 minutes in and skim the walls.

I have a DeWalt random orbital with an attachment for a shop vac that I used with mesh paper to remove horrible texture that some idiot put on with drywall mud. I should have just ripped the drywall out and started over. Attaching the shop vac reduced dust by about 99%. Worth it.
