Cliff's notes: how do I install a 2m/70cm antenna. I have a 3/4" hole and coax cable with a standard CB radio female end next to it.
Currently, my Trooper has a well-installed Firestik spring mounted to the the rear spare tire bracket with a 5' Firestik screwed into it.
I'm planning on installing a 2m/70cm radio in the truck. I'd like to move the CB antenna to the front bumper, and use the 2' Firestik from my E30 in place of the 5' one. Then, I could use the much better rear location for a big 2m/70cm antenna.
I know how to install a second CB antenna. I know how to install a 2m/70cm antenna. What I don't know how to do is convert my CB antenna mount to a 2m/70cm antenna. I really don't want to run new coax cable, so what kind of adapter/voodoo magic do I need to use?
Cut the end off the coax and put the type of connector your new antenna uses on it.
Thanks for the response, I knew someone here would have an answer.
I think I'm just going to put an NMO mount on my roof at this point, though. In the long run that will probably be easier/ look better/ work better. What's one more hole, anyway?
That's also a lot of radio you ordered there for under fifty bucks, delivered. I'm tempted to pick up one of those myself, but I never really got into the 2M thing. Did that come with a rubber duckie?
Tom, can you post a picture of where you want to put it and what style of NMO mount you plan on using.
Reason I ask is that you want optimal performance. Placement of antennas can effect your transmission because the vehicle (and a style of mount) effect the ground which in turn effects your transmission. This is why you see radial beams specifically built on most base stations and it is also why most are made to rotate.
I'd like to see what CB antenna you are using. Keep in mind, by attaching the CB antenna to the front, your signal will possibly radiate further to your rear, but I'd have to understand the mounting first.
There may be an adapter from your current antenna to NMO.
I think I'm going to leave my CB antenna where it is, and install a NMO mount about a 1/3 of the way forward of the rear of the vehicle in the middle of the roof, then put the tallest antenna I can find on there.
