The roof of my Disco is showing it's age.  The clear coat is failing and turning white across large swaths of it.  How do I determine how many cans I will need to cover it?  I found a colour that is close to the original paint, but it's pricey, I would not want to buy more than I need nor need to wait for more to arrive if I buy too little.

If the color your shooting is light, make your base the cheap white cans first. If it's dark, start with the black cans. You can usually get two black/white cans for the cost of the special color. Then spray your final color. No point of building up layers with the good stuff, if you're just going to bury it.

Plasti-Dip says one can will cover 5sq ft. I'd use at least 8 cans of cheap black/white and 2-3 cans of the good color.

If that seems excessive, remember 99% of the problems people always bitch about is because they didn't get the dip thick enough. They do 2 weak layers, and it looks good, but when they go to peel it off, it doesn't.

I dipped the Murdercycle's tins at least 20 layers, changing the color on a whim, never peeling it off, just hosing a new layer on. When I finally did pull off, it was the thickness of a vinyl pool float. That gives you an idea of how thick you want it.

Pro tip: if it starts looking faded or shabby, wash off the big crud and bird E36 M3, and simply spray another layer.

Thanks! Now I just need to figure out what colour of the cheap stuff I need.

Get a can of each. Test it on the roof along with with the expensive color. Whichever you end up not liking won't go to waste. Lay that color down first. Then bury it under the desired base.
