I know the current rage is to use the stuff because it's easy to peel off and you can change your car's look without permanence.
I'm on the other side of the coin. The basket carrier on my "new" C70 has the plastic coating coming off. I would love to Plasti-Dip it and have it last as long as possible. Can I spray a clear over it, or do something else to make it last a few years?
what is the color/texture now?
i'm a giant fan of rustoleum spray on bedliner in a can. i use it on fender flares, below body lines on pickups to prevent stone damage, below body lines when i great stuff and bondo the crap out of something to make it look good for another year, etc...
I used Plasti-dip on parts of the luggage rack on my Miata. Its not exactly "hard use" (cuz I don't, you know, put luggage on it), but after three years its still in place and hasn't peeled anywhere. I also found out last week that "Back to Black" works really well on it when it starts to grey. As always, your mileage may vary.

It's very similar to the coating you see on wire rack closet shelving.

If it will ever see water, don't plastidip it.
To make it last longer you can use the "dip coat" spray and give it a 1-layer refresher coat every 2-3 years.
Mine really started to deteriorate after about a year and a half. It sat outside in the sun and weather the entire time. It was also white, the black seems to hold up better, at least to me.
^Makes sense. Black would naturally be more UV-resistant.
Don't get it on your hootus.
The rattle can spray job on my civic lasted well over a year before it started to really weather. Was considering dipping the whole car, after reading this doubt I will now.
