He's just older than you. You learn things as you go through life.

It's getting to the point where spending time with him is just not tolerable anymore. That's easy. None of the soft approaches will work. You have to tell him, "If you don't stop talking politics, we're not hanging out anymore", then when he tries to justify why he's doing it, stop him in his tracks and tell him again. I've done this in the past, and it works 100%.
I've had to use this approach with my mother, who inevitably bitches about my siblings whenever I talk to her.
Another thing to consider is that its much easier as an older adult to bitch than it is to actually do something. If you don't hobbies, if you don't have an exciting life, you'll make it exciting by get worked up about pointless stuff.

It always amuses me how some folks get so worked up over politics (on both sides) when they only know a small part of the whole story. Kinda silly.
That's actually among the things I find the most frustrating, and thus likely to get me worked up. We theoretically have a system of representative government, which should allow me to spend a modest amount of time being a bit informed and then voting for people who share my stances, more or less.
Instead, you could make it a full time job to find out what's actually going on and still not really have any idea, and then the representation doesn't work out all that well a lot of the time.
Apart from giving a bit to organizations which specialize in the cat-herding of politicians and attempts to make politics more transparent, I'm not sure what to do. Though that certainly doesn't keep me from getting a bit worked up, silly or not.
Ugh, just now he sends me this email that he wrote.
A WATERSHED MOMENT By now, you have probably heard the news about the Supreme Court decision on Obamacare, or “the Affordable Health Care Act”, passed by a bare majority in the House and Senate without a SINGLE Republican vote, signed into law by President Barack Hussein Obama, and upheld by a 6-3 vote of SCOTUS. As surprising as this court decision was to many of us, and considering that the law is opposed by 2/3 of the American public, I believe it is necessary to place it in the proper perspective. For more than 100 years, since the Woodrow Wilson administration, the federal government has been embarked on a relentless expansion of its power, consuming more and more of the economy, asserting more and more control over the citizenry. At times the growth of government has slowed, other times it has leapt ahead, but at no time has it stopped, although the administration of Ronald Reagan gave us hope for a while. The impetus for the growth of the Federal leviathan has always been the same: It’s For Your Own Good! The questions remain: who decides? When it comes to programs that cost money (is there any other kind?) who pays for it? Who is it good for? Or is it really good for anyone? Does our concept of freedom allow anyone to opt out? If it is shown to be ineffective, or even detrimental to the country, does it go away? Have the American people become so incompetent that they can no longer be allowed to live their own lives on their own terms? When did that happen? Many of our friends have come to believe that the actions of the current occupant of the White House are illegitimate, and will be undone, because of the questionable citizenship status of the POTUS. All we need is to have him evicted, and all our troubles are over. I have told my friends that there is no “magic cure” for what ails us. Obama did not do any of these things on his own. There is no court in the land that will remove him from office, or keep him off the ballot in November. We cannot go back in time and undo what is done. No, the future is where the solution lies. Only by getting the message out to our fellow citizens who have been sleepwalking through the last few years will we be able to address the multiple injuries and insults to the body politic. The Democrats (the home of the Government Party) must be turned out, and resoundingly so, at the ballot box. There is no alternative, no shortcut, no quick and easy out. The repudiation of these leeches must be so significant that the inevitable vote fraud (promulgated by AG Holder) cannot prevent us from regaining control. Even when that is done, we cannot go back to business as usual. Pressure must be maintained on the new Congress and President to resist the temptations to accrue power- their feet must be held to the fire to fix the damage already done. Go out and get the story out. Call your local Republican Party office and see what you can do to help. I do not say this as a Republican, they are simply the only alternative- my own leanings are Libertarian, but they do not have enough of a presence to make a difference. Besides, if enough Libertarians, TEA Party activists and Conservatives take part in the GOP, it may become the party of the people again.
Just shoot me now.....
The emails are the worst. I used to get those also. Almost all of them are cut and paste / forward jobs. The explanation for sending many of them was "I thought it was funny/interesting"... argh...
All you have to do is see that someone has included "Hussein" in Obama's name to know they are a neocon.
No politics in talk. No political emails. Count me out. I feel differently. Don't try to change my mind.
Thats what he needs to hear. My in-laws are very much democrats, and others of their side are completely republican. None of us talk politics. It works. We get along.

Those are the worst. But this one is the worst of all - He wrote it and emailed it to everyone like the worlds going to implode in the next few months and he's found a way to stop it.

I get the worst of both worlds. My bleeding heart liberal stepmom sends out stupid bleeding heart liberal emails to all her children (including me). Her neocon children reply (and include me) blasting her for supporting a non-citizen Muslim Anti-Christ.
Ohh, that is bad.
Getting him not to send you these emails should be doable though. He may not have anything else to talk about in person but asking not to have those emails sent to you seems like a very reasonable request. I worked for me.

Agreed.
In reply to aircooled:
I'm sending him an email tonight. I can't take it anymore and it's now going to get worse from here.
In reply to Otto Maddox:
My wife's mom and uncle used to go back and fourth on issues. That stopped. The remarks were pretty funny though with his 7th grade grammar.
In reply to poopshovel:
I can read them just fine. The not responding is hard. I get the urge to antagonize everyone just to get even.
Set up an email filter on the keywords "Hussein, Reagan, GOP, Dems" and have it auto-reply with "This email was considered inappropriate and irritating and has been deleted automatically".

New avatar. Nice.
Send Dad over here and we will throw shrimp and flounder at him till he screams uncle. If he loses his temper someone gets a patio extension.
