We are at the end of the fiscal year so they'll steal some money from somewhere to give me 1/2 of it now, and the other half in a few months. I'm ok with that. I could have pushed the issue and had it all now, but I'm not looking to push people around or play hard ball.

Congratulations. I'm glad the direct & simple approach worked, it didn't for me. When I needed a raise about a year ago, I had to go mercenary and take a position with a competitor. Its been worth it though, both in terms of pay and working conditions.

It's not hating; I've seen companies string people along until the other offer is no longer feasible. They use this opportunity to find someone new.
I'm not worried about them stringing me along. This isn't the first former employer that has asked me to come back since I've been with this company, and I turned down two interview requests as well. If they play games, then I'll take my ball and go home. The job market has been changing here in MI....
