Sending out a computer-generated letter costs them, what, maybe 50 cents? Might as well do it and see if you get a check back.

My GF is a bill collector for the hospital. She said to let it go to a collection agency then offer to settle. They usually knock %40 off the top.

It doesn't effect your credit for 3 months I think.

Well, so far in my readings off the FTC site, they are in violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act by not providing written documentation after a dispute of the debt and continuing to pursue debt collection activities....
