I have a little Olympus digital recorder that I want to be able to move files to my PC. It can't possibly be as simple as finding a wire with the correct plug for the Headphone jack on the recorder and the correct plug for the Microphone input on the PC, can it?
That's one way if you have audio recording software on the PC. If the digital recorder happens to have a USB connector, I'd use that instead.

no dice on that. Nothing in the instructions about moving data to a different device, either.
Couldn't I just record it on Windows Media Player?
Its made for more complicated things, but this program is free and would work fine for that purpose http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

If it's the same one we have in the office, there's a program you have to install on your computer that transfers the recordings to a folder in your Documents (IIRC it's "Olympus Digital Wave Player")
If you have a newer model it probably works like a flash drive or a digital camera, you just plug it in and access the recording files directly.
No point having a digital recorder and then having to re-record it to your PC, you could do that with an old tape recorder.
+1 for Audacity. It's free! Slight learning curve, but it is worth the effort.
Windows Media player will also work, but it has a limited recording time.
You can get the cable to do the link up at pretty much any store like k-mart, wallmart, bestbuy.
Yeah if you have to record the audio playing from the recorder to the PC...Audacity is the right program for the job.
But you shouldn't have to do that.
