Well, Emily is on her way to visit. Not much of a danger, but I expect full panic mode here soon. I will buy 50.00 gas for the generator, hurricane food goodies at Big Lots, and expect maybe, 30mph winds. No real danger, but will probably lose power for a while. GRM HQ is in the cone as well. What are you guys doing?
Just schooled Alan, our newest employee and relocated Chicagoan, in the ways of the hurricane prep. (Was tipped off there was a need when he said, "Cone? What's this cone you guys keep talking about?") We're not doing much, mostly just using it as a reminder to do the stuff we should've done June 1: Gas and run the generators, check the supplies of water, batteries, lamp oil, pb and bread, etc. Reminded him to charge his phone and gas his car, move outside junk/future projectiles inside.
That's about it. I'm thinking about panicking early so I can eat my "preparedness" SPAM. Yum, SPAM.

SOOOOOO glad I live in the midwest.
LOL cone. Different kind of cone Alan.
Yea, we prep for tornadoes and floods here. Of course flooding is part of hurricanes. No worries for a while here. On the down side, that means no storm chasing for me.
Back to ghost hunting it is, then.
Ah so that's who Alan is!

Meh,
I grew up in the Midwest with suffocating heat in the Summer (worse than FL if you can believe it!) , horrible Winters, and frequent tornadoes.
Here in the Daytona area we got hit with a bunch of storms in 04, but hadn't had much to speak of for 20 years previous, and haven't had a serious storm since.
Everyplace has it's issues to deal with. The Hurricane threat is WAY overhyped! The worst part is everyone is glued to the Weather Channel panic stricken for the week leading up to the storm. The grocery stores get to be a frantic nightmare with everyone preparing for armageddon.
Then if the storm happens.....it rains....the wind blows a bit, and it goes away.
At least with hurricanes you can see them coming and have time to prepare, unlike tornadoes and earthquakes.

"the wind blows a little bit". Heh.
1969, eh?

We run with the Skoolie and fully stocked taco truck and bicycle . That way we can Survive and if Marie wants to kill me I can ride my bicycle away . We also take truck and ZAV in tow . Also we basically move 50 miles or less from Cone
Luckily I don't live in a trailer, so I'm safe from Tornados.

That was a scary one. I think it was an EF5, too. Hurricanes can tear up a much wider area, however.
Both suck if they hit you.
An EF2/EF1:

Don't use a Johnny on the Spot during a tornado.

We remember Wilma real well. Not a major storm at all, but no power for three weeks. Life gets real different.

We had what I called a micro-burst storm. No tornado, but downward wind speeds in small plots were picking up sheds, truck beds, garages, and anything else not held down and throwing them in the air. Same story. Many people had no power for two to three weeks. We found out the biggest problem was the old transformers. The power company in Saint Louis has done wonders to improve power distribution. I guess that was the better result.

Maybe I'm a little gunshy, but memories of Andrew are still in my head. It was expected, lots of warnings, but 26 people still died and we had 200mph winds. Not as bad as Katrina, but I DO NOT WANT to go through anything even close to that again. CAT 3? I'm on my way to Atlanta.
Yeah, you don't mess with Mother Nature. When Francis hit in 04 they had mandatory evacuation in this area on the beach-side. That was a big mofo that stretched from the Florida Keys all the way up past Jacksonville-- for 4 days! We retreated to Jax, but even up there we could hear large trees snapping, and the house moving under the power of the wind. Scary ( fight or flight) type stuff.
Of course I've also seen and heard tornadoes, and if that doesn't put the fear of Mother Nature in you......nothing will!
There's three names to remember: Andrew, Camille and Katrina. Andrew for damage, Katrina for the death toll, and Camille for being the strongest to hit land in ages. I'm lucky I live inland from the MS Gulf Coast.
Oh, and if you want to point out how much Mother Nature can suck? Ivan.
Meh. I pretty much ignore them. Generator tests happen about once a month around here, and with diesel the fuel doesn't usually go bad. I keep enough on hand to run it a week. Canned goods, got them. Water, got a well and can even boil water without burning it. The house is built like a tank, the two trees that hit it during Hugo in '89 bounced off. It's also well above sea level. It would take close to 30 feet to put it in the house. So, I'm good.
nice thing about living here in the WNC mountains is no hurricanes, no mega acre forest fires, the earthquakes we get are ~ .5 on the richter scale, no mud slides like PRC, no huge snowstorms, no heat like Texas is getting, no tornados, no flooding ...
within 3 1/2 hrs of 3 (eventually 4 ) race tracks
need to remind myself sometimes how nice it is here
To the tune of "Here Comes Santa Claus", here's the Hurricane Song!
I hate hurricanes, I hate hurricanes, they are such a pain..
Big waves crashin and big trees smashin and fifteen feet of rain.
Winds will howl and you will scowl with ridges on your brow..
So pull that bed up over your head cuz hurricane comin right now.
I hat hurricanes, I hate hurricanes, even when they leave..
Food from cans that cut your hands, and water tastes like pee.
Chainsaws whine, except for mine-cuz looters took it home..
So be polite, and do things right wherever hurricanes roam.
True story: when Opal hit the Gulf Coast, she was moving so fast that there was a chance it'd still be a tropical storm when it hooked NE and aimed for Atlanta. I woke up the wife & kid, got em to the basement/garage (didn't worry about flooding, we were on the top of a hill), and turned the old tube down there to the Weather Channel. My (then) wife was angry about this. She's from the Midwest, and proclaimed, "I've seen tornadoes! This is nothing!".
I actually fell asleep on the old recliner I'd stashed down there for about three hours. When I woke up, she was nervously peeking out the door looking at the pine trees waving like mad in the back yard. "You never told me these damn things lasted so long!", she said.
Heads down, stay safe!
Yeah man, hurricane season. The storms themselves aren't so bad if you make basic preparations but the hype I can do without.
I guess y'all have seen the Weather Channel Jim Cantore ad, right? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48r4IQTB3NE
I used to think we were OK inland

Jimmy Buffet song
been through a couple. I always found it funny how people from california (fires, earthquakes, and mudslides) Mid-West (tornados and flooding) and like all find hurricanes so frightening.
I mean.. who doesn't like a storm you can put in your daytimer and plan around?
