Agreed. And I think the school did what they had to do to make sure the situation didn't turn into the mess the kids were hoping for.

I have no sympathy for trolls, and that's what those boys were.

Exactly. it had nothing to do with patriotism, and about the same as standing up in the middle of class during a test and yelling cusswords at the teacher just to prove "freedom of speech." You don't HAVE freedom of speech in school if it's done to intentionally disrupt school.

And we celebrate Cinco de Mayo because about the time that Napolean III decided to invade Mexico, he was entertaining the thought of helping out the Confederacy in beating the North. But the mexican army kicking his butt in Puebla, though it didn't stop France from winning the war overall, did put pause to wanting to send troops northward to help the Confederates.

So while Cinco de Mayo is primarily a state holiday in Puebla, Mexico, it has (or should have) a deeper meaning for us up here than merely a day to drink Coronas.

The kids wear thier American flag garb on a regular basis, not just Cinco de Mexico day. At least two of the kids are half Mexican. To get a rise or not, shame on the school faculty for even addressing the issue. Then the next day hundreds of Mexican students staged a walk-out in protest of the Patriotic kids not getting disciplined enough.

Gotta love America...

News flash: we live in America. That means we are free to wear anything we want on any day we want including Cinco de Mayo, St Patricks Day, Boxing Day or any other holiday. That's what this country is all about. If my kid wants to wear an American flag shirt to school on Cinco de Mayo then the school admins have no right to tell her to take it off or cover it up.

I bet they wouldn't tell the Latino kids not to wear Mexican flag shirts to school on March 6 (the day the Alamo fell) 'cuz it's OK to hurt white folk's feelings.

This is the part that everyone fails to remember. Kids like this don't make me miss teaching one bit.

That picture is photochopped.

Clearly the Greenies that bombed the oil rig in the gulf to protest the offshore drilling legislation, but apparently that hasn't killed the flounders that keep swimming around this board.

There has got to be more to this story. The shirts don't match, some are vaguely patriotic. Any given day in any high school in America you can find 5 kids with flags on their clothing I am sure of it. They were causing a disturbance somehow, I bet money on it and I'm not the gambling type. This is just more, "liberals hate America" rah-rah BS!

Being patriotic has nothing to do with the clothes on your back or how many W stickers you can plaster on your SUV.

I love this comment.

I do McDonald's two side salads, croutons, dressing, and a water for $2.18 or so. I do add the chicken sandwich for another $1 once in a while.

I think they hate that when I order all that stuff for $3.

We get the potato tacos and the 99cent chicken burritos. Dinner for 2 for less than $5. Good for when Kim is working late.

Sometimes I get a triple layer nachos, a Fiesta Potato side, and a side of a plain tortilla, 10.5" (you have to tell them that they have to tell the line people 10.5", there's no button for that.) Potatoes on the tortilla and it's a potato burrito. I like the Tostadas, but sometimes the lettuce (I think) gives me a headache so I avoid them and other lettuce containing items like the potato taco. You also get a lot more food with the side potato dish and a side tortilla for about the same money. Cheese casadilla is also good, but not on the big board menu. It's still on the computer terminal, so they can still order/make it.

American Flag Etiquette.

The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations.

OK so yes, circumstances would show that this incident was instigated by those kids, and yes, it's stupid to put them on an internet pedestal.

But they're still kids. Doing dumb kid things. Kid protests are usually as dumb as kid mischief, and often the two are pretty much the same thing.

The school didn't have to make a big deal out of it and give them what they wanted. And the school did just that. Which, in my mind, justifies these kids actions. I'd never send my kid to a school where he or she couldn't wear whatever they wanted provided it wasn't either blatantly offensive or indecent.

If schools want to avoid things like this, make uniforms mandatory.
