I was thinking the same thing - I remember being about 11 when I read the Thomas Covenant series. It opens with our hero Thomas - a leper, raping a 16yr old girl. I don't think it scarred me too badly although when I get mad I sometimes do try to scorch the earth. My wedding ring is ineffective white gold apparently.

I forgot to mention in my post that I have read all the books and I did too enjoy them. I have never even heard of Battle Royal, but the Hunger Games to me is more original than some of the literary crap that is out there for teens. How much more teen vampire/werewolf/witch material really needs to be written. Its beating a dead horse IMO.

I'm looking forward to the movie.

The movie is good, but the point is that it's NOT original, it's a rip off - right down to the situations the kids encounter and the outcome. It's one thing to have different stories about the same type of situation with different "takes" on getting from point A to point B.

Look at all the Snow White movies coming out. They are based upon the same stories but get there totally different ways.

I read all 3 books last week. I don't think it was a rip-off of any story. But it was a pretty familiar layout.

My wife made the comparison to Battle Royale as well, but from what I know the two are similar but still very different.

I loved the first book, thought the second book was too much fluff, and was disappointed in the third book. Too many elements felt forced (instead of the author showing you it happen, she just told you it happened). There were a few parts that make me surprised this is considered a teen book.

The wife and I are gonna see the movie Sunday.

I read the books to see what all the fuss was about. I felt that they were a fun, easy read, but wasn't impressed much beyond that.

I was dragged to the movie last night. Based on the teensploitation factor of the marketing campaign I assumed that it would suck, but was pleasantly surprised - it was fairly well done, and even moving in parts. I wouldn't tell the rest of you to go rush to see it, but it was by no means the massive turd that other recent sifi/action movies have been.
