Could be fuel or oil, too.
I know of engines hydrolocking on oil.
This after being accused that it was fuel causing it.
tuna55, it is a bit early to be hitting the sauce that hard isn't it?
1988RedT2. Not what causes it, but actual terms. Someone listed it as bottoming out the piston and it took me a while to catch on to what it actually was. It is hydro-locking.
lowered-Civic-with-cold-air-intake-and-no-bypass-valve-itis? There was an outbreak in the late 90's.
Well, via the googles, of course, we have "introduction of any incompressible fluid, which exceeds the maximum volume at top dead center (TDC)."
I don't think we'll find many one word synonyms.

Or in the case of diesels, they usually runaway......

In my "old dude w/ a fast Civic days" I referred to this as the "cold water intake" and zero kids got it. At least I cracked me up.
i was able to put hydrolock and it's variants with a few other choice terms and got it.
Thanks for your help.

I'm still that old dude--albeit with a moderately quick Civic.
It still has the "cold water intake", I just avoid puddles like the plague--granted, it might see 2 or 3 rainstorms in the ~1000 miles a year it gets used.
In my case it was Wife-off-roading-through-a-pond-itis Luckily she didn't try and re-start it, instead she played the cute blond card and waved to a couple of Jeeps who towed her out, pulled the plugs and then turned it over. Engine still runs years later.
I have a new job as a patent examiner. I was examining a patent and needed to find all available synonyms for it, so I could search.
Here is the game. You come up with an idea and pay an attorney/agent to write your patent so you get approval. My job is to find prior inventions that I can say no with. So what does the agents do? Get real creative with the language.
Like: A case: With a plurality of actuation levers engaging beam with a flat surface uniformly extended from one end, causing a restricted area abating fluid motion timed with orbital protrusions by contact via direct or indirect methods.
WTF did I just say?
I'm glad there's an examiner in the USPTO who's actually doing this kind of thing, do your coworkers sleep all day and have a rubber stamp attached to a dippy bird on the desk? I mean who the hell let Apple get a patent on rounded corners?
