My wife hyphenated her name originally.
27 years later she's still trying to fix the confusion.
Her GA driver's license says her last name is LESKOFENNER (no hyphens). It's alphabetized under "L". Plus, some state forms don't have enough blanks, so she becomes "Leskofenne" or less. She has gone by Fenner for over 20 years. But her passport says "Fenner"
It can only be changed in GA by a court order.
I'm still not sure what her legal name actually is. I hope she outlives me.

A friend was getting married, and his fiance asked if he would mind if she hyphenated her name. Her maiden name was Johannesmeyer (a hyphenated name that got the hyphen dropped). His name was Purcell. She would have been Purcell-Johannesmeyer.
He (very wisely) said he would be fine with it.
She was just testing him. Her name is Purcell.

My favorite hyphenated name (although it may not be a surname), La-a. Pronounced; Luhdashuh.

Try it and it's a lock that she will outlive you.

Now that's funny! I don't care who you are.
I had to take an accident report a while back and one of the drivers had no last name. Her license reads "Betty NLN".

My wife asked the same question (but for some reason the names were not the same?) as we began planning our wedding. She is very attached to her last name as there are only a handful of people in the US (and probably the world) with that last name and all are directly related. I told her she could keep her name, take my name, I'd take her name, or we could come up with a new one for both of us to take, but there would be no hyphenating in any way shape or form.
We still got married and we each kept the names we had, but we both unblinkingly respond to the other's last name. So we each sorta have two last names. It very rarely causes an issue since we respond to both names. I thought we might have to carry around copies of our marriage license, but we've only needed once or twice in 7 years.

Also, anyone remember an SNL skit with Nicholas Cage where they were figuring out a name for their kid so he wouldn't get bullied? His name was Oz-Weep-Eh, spelled A-s-s-w-i-p-e
Yes, I remember that one. Twas a long time ago, maybe early to mid 90's? Asswipe Johnson.
Tom Hanks, I think.
Just went searching, and I think they used the joke a couple of times- Hanks was Mr. Asswipe...

(If serious) Because hey--why not have my kid's name be a joke for the rest of his life. What a cutup!!!
A friend of mine gave his son the middle name "Danger". If only my parents were so much fun.

My girlfriend and I have talked and we agreed that when we get married she'll take my illy spelled german last name over her illy spelled german last name. Nothing gained, nothing lost.
