Super Bowl ad shows it going around a race course.
Which one? (I really don't recognize it...)
Isn't that supposed to be some sort of luxury sedan? They made it look like a lower dollar sport / drifter.
Here's a link to the ad: http://blogs.edmunds.com/straightline/2009/01/hyundai-genesis-coupe-super-bowl-ad-is-out-early.html
How did they do the 'hop' while the car was in reverse?
They had the "making of" half hour show about that commercial on SPEED TV the day before the SB (yesterday as I post this). I didn't think to DVR it, perhaps it'll be back on again? I'm pretty sure Rhys Millen was the driver.

Everyone on this board moans and bitches that "car companies don't make a sporty RWD economy car for us"... and then you whine that the promo of it going around Road Atlanta (I think) shows it drifting? Because, obviously a "drift car" is no good for what we want.
We had one to drive... it was really, really impressive. Smooth, comfortable, good fit and finish, bordering on elegant, but with still enough fun-to-drive capability that you didn't feel like you'd been embalmed. Much better than the Volvo that we had next, which cost 2x the price and did not measure up to the Genesis's standard. I want one.
Margie
We had the Genesis sedan in the office. I didn't get to sample it, but it got high marks from all who experienced it. If Margie wants one, that's an awfully good sign.
The Coupe sounds good so far. The R-spec Turbo 4 cylinder certainly checks all the right boxes, and promises to be a whole lot less $$$ than the 370Z/Camaro/Mustang/Challenger that it most easily compares against. I'd like it to be a little lighter, but I think I've said that about every car I've driven for the last several years.
I'm looking for a V-8 Coupe down the road when the swap candidates are available second-hand.
I fell for the ad hook line and sinker. 306 HP on a rear wheel drive with Brembos and a limited slip?!? Drifter boy or not, I am intrigued, and if it is affordable, I would seriously consider one.
Plus with tha Hyundai warrenty, you really could beat the tar out of it, and as long as they don't start up with the Mitsi/Subi practice of scouring the SCCA sites for names to void warrenties, I bet it becomes quite popular with the auto X crowd, not to mention HPDE/Track days.
Heck, given their repuation for longevity, and their budding interest in motorsports as the big Japenese players pull out, I really think this car has potential.
FYI, if you go to the website, it was Rhys Millen driving, so that might explain the proclivity of sideways, and that Hyundai is touting the fact it is a rear wheel drive car, so they might just be doing that to be obvious.
Limited slip is a Torsen, 111-inch wheelbase (much bigger than I thought!) and curb weight is 3,294 for the turbo four and 3,389 for the V6. This is very interesting.
I auto-x'd my 02 Elantra for 2 years, have beat the snot out of it, been down the strip 40+ times and with 102k miles still knocks dow 32mpg day to day and is as neat and rattle free as it was new.
I WILL be looking into the Coupe to replace the Elantra. I'll take my 2.0T 6-spd manual Coupe in white please.
I'm half tempted to wait till it comes out and make a deal with the devil to finance a base model turbo4. I might just go to the hyundai dealer to see what they know about the coupe
edit I just went thrue the E-brochure, Lime Rock Green, and the auto is actually tempting
re-edit When will the GRM get to test one!!

It would be really neat if Hyundai follows the Mazda model of supporting grassroots (and not so grassroots) forms of racing in the near future. Much like the Mazdaspeed Motorsports organization, Hyundai could achieve market share very quickly in the enthusiast crowd by creating a similar group. Based on the aforementioned TV ad, clearly the car will drift, so they could jump into that fray, and, as Mental notes, it seems to have the makings of the perfect track/auto-x car. I wonder what class it would fall into for SCCA/NASA racing??
I had a long post, but I think it can be summed up like this:
They are advertising this car by showing footage of it being flogged to hell at a real road-course. When was the last time you saw a commercial for any car, that was just footage from a road course?
I seriously want one! The commercial made me all tingly in my pants. Even the girlfriend was like, "Wow, I should get one of those!"
