To me this is a case of not reading the instructions. Apple never said that you could backup with iCloud...it's just a buffer that puts your photos into the cloud for 30 days so you can back them up however you want. With the cloud, you can see your photos on your iPhone, iPad, MacBook, Apple TV, Apple Watch and iPod. So cool!

To backup, you simply install iPhoto or Aperture on your Mac, log into your Apple account, agree to sync with the Cloud, put them into folders, upgrade to Photos, open all of your old iPhoto and Aperture libraries, export the photos to your desktop, import them into Photos, manually re-enter all of your meta data, re-rate all of your photos, and then save them as Photo libraries until Photos is superseded and you have to re-do all of this again. Simple.

Personally, I use Photos to import my photo stream, but I export everything as a JPG to an external hard drive. I hate committing to some program (Aperture, iPhoto, Lightroom or otherwise). Then all of your photos and work is trapped in some program that may someday be dead. If you have JPG and NEF files on a hard drive, then you can use whatever program of the day is around to manipulate them.TO me, it's easy because I am all Mac. My wife and kids iPhones are a total PITA. Apple (and I LOVE Apple) needs to fix this one.

Nope. It has to do with how poorly Winblowz handles drivers in the general. For most network printers you can use generic HP LaserJet drivers, but for some you have to load the drivers for each version of winbloze onto the server when setting up the printer (including 32 and 64-bit) and then you get to update those drivers whenever something changes.

For many years (before the iPhone 5) they were also the only phone manufacturer not using the latest miniature USB connector. You could charge or connect to any phone in the world with the same cord/charger...except an iPhone.

We have a winner. After doing this it then re-sync'd and I can access my pics!!!! A++ to the GRM community for helping out. F- to apple for making something that shouldn't have even needed thinking about a three hour odyssey

Before you spend too much time cursing Apple, understand this is a security feature to protect you from having your pictures stolen and it took me all of a minute to figure this out the first time I went to backup pictures off an iPhone 4S with the latest version of iOS loaded on it.

Honestly, some people get so emotionally involved in a rather simple piece of code that it seems like you can't see the forest for the trees. Take a breath, take a step back, breathe and try to look at the problem logically. Worst case, Google can help.

Yeah, I agree that's annoying. In Europe they are forced to provide a Micro-USB adapter for free as part of an EU ruling. Luckily Bluetooth is getting good enough that the connector stuff is becoming less of an issue, still pretty bad form from them, but not unexpected.

Helps to have good Server admins that understand how to manage printers in a networked environment.

Possibly the dumbest thing about Windows is the swap space management. By default, it will use your swap file even if you have over 10GB of RAM free, slowing the computer for no good reason whatsoever. I argued with a guy who actually works at Microsoft about this and he said that it was done to prevent a sudden change in performance at all costs...including slowing the computer at all times for no reason. Which is kind of like having your car drag its brakes all the time so that towing a boat won't feel too different.

I don't know if it's been fixed in Win8/10 but it's like this up to at least Win7.

Wanna have fun? Download an app called "camber" and realize that you can now check or your camber using the side of your phone and a straight edge.

There's also the OBD2 apps and Harry's LapTimer and the ability to take video with telemetry using your phone.

Or the Apps that allow you to follow your favorite events via live timing and scoring apps in a format that is legible (RaceMonitor, LeMans, etc).

So yeah, "APPS" are berkeleying useless and only involve candy crush.

Yup. I don't wanna even get into "SpeedBoost" in Win 7 where you use removable media (Like a USB stick or SD Card). Um, yeah I've got 32GB of RAM, I think the 8GB flash drive isn't really going to help much here.

I disabled swapping entirely on my gaming PC immediately to put an end to that crap. The speed difference is huge. I didn't know Win7's start menu wasn't instantaneous until I saw it run on other computers.

Probably right. They have to be good here.

I haven't had an issues at home either. The worst issues i've had with my printers have been hardware related. Now i just count on replacing it every year.

I never said apps were "useless", I just said I don't use, or need them. This includes the examples you listed.

Two different cords/connectors in 8 years is not bad at all ... And the latest one that you can plug in either way is a worthwile upgrade to me.

Of note for the original issue. There is a Windows application called iTools which lets you access iPad / iPhone files in a more "traditional" manner.

Getting photos off an iPhone 5s is pretty simple. Connect it to computer, use iPhoto, or whatever your photo browser happens to be to import them, and voila! Photos.

Mostly due to Windows. I don't use it outside of the appstore on the phone since I don't listen to much music and only care about pictures and I can get those outside of iTunes.

Solid state drives are the best thing to happen to PCs since the GPU came along.

You can also commit blasphemy and use google photos to allow you to access and download photos anywhere.

I turned off cellular data for it since it was chewing up a lot, but otherwise seems to work fine now that it only syncs on wifi.

I know, I'm now their slave, but bondage can make some things easier.
