I'll check it out. Thanks.
No problem. I'll tell you what. After my first shave I knew I made a good decision. I hate paying $5 per refill blade and still not getting a close shave. Now, there is only one area that is still a challenge. Basically my neck, on either side of my throat. It's kinda concave just a bit. Those areas are where I can't get as close, but even that area is now closer than any shave I ever got with electric or bic/gilette.

Great. Now my arsehole looks huge.
I did, but the other folks saying they get many months out of a blade didn't mention any stroping or anything. There's nothing I could do to get more than a week out of one of those blades. I wasn't really asking sinc i know I'll never get more than a few shaves. I guess my stubble is more like little telephone poles than hair.
Try the electric razor first and then take care of the blade and you'll get more shaves.
You can't really strop the blades well like you can with a straight razor since the carrier they are in prevents you from accessing the whole blade, but you can stop the blade edge from corroding by drying it off and you can finish it off enough to make a difference.
I've never gotten anywhere near that amount of a blade anytime in my life before.

Dear lord! I just went there.
I can't actually believe that there are enough "shaving enthusiasts" out there to support a busy forum and that they have get togethers. There is a thread titled "someone tell me I smell as good as I think i do"
I have always felt internet forums were very efficient at turning interests into obsessions but this one suprises even me.
And all I had to do was type "shaving forum" into that little GoogleBox in the top right corner of my browser. I berkeleying love the internet.
There's also threads titled:
The Continuing Flea-Market Adventures of El Dingo Satanico and What's a good 'Summer hat'?
I imagine each and every member of that forum posts from an armchair inside his hunting lodge, beside an open fireplace, with animal heads adorning the mantle.
Christ. A blade in my Fusion lasts me like 3-4 shaves (a week)
I bought a nice $200 electric razor... it wont shave anything below my jawline, so it's going in the trash.
I think it's time I try a safety razor.

No, use them both and then strop your fusion after each shave and shake it off real well and then store it sharp side up.
I finally got around to replacing the blades in my electric razor and I'm amazed at the difference. I almost don't need the manual razor - almost. There are still areas the electric does better than the manual and places the blade does better than the electric, like below the jawline as you discovered.
Together they do better than either do alone.
I have no idea what electric razor you're using but I'm using the Norelco with the the triple shaving surfaces on the blade. While I've experimented with the buzzer type of razor I've never really used anything but the Norelco for long periods of time.
Norelco has basically 3 different types of blades that can be identified by how many shaving circles there are. I got the cheapest 3 shaving circles razor I could find when I bought it. It cost me around $100. I've used it for 4-5 years but have only replaced the blades once.
After I bought the new blades I got 2 coupons for $5 off on the purchase of new blades at Target. If someone wants them I'll be glad to mail them to you. They are good thru 8/24/2011

Give the safety a try. I have no interest in have a $100+ electric that needs blades every year for $50 AND use a disposable that needs $5 blades every other week (assuming the electric will allow the blades to last twice as long). I'll take the $.10 shave all day long, especially since neither electric, disposable or a combo of both got as close as my safety.
I have the buzzer type, wet/dry, with the pivoting head and self-cleaning system. I've tried it every day, every 2 days, every 3 days, before a shower, in the shower, after a shower, with cream, w/o cream, etc. I've also had two Norelcos. None of them worked for me either. All of them had excellent reviews on Amazon. They irritate my face too much so I just use a manual razor.
I'll try this "stroping" thing and storing the blade in something that wont let it pit.
Taiden wrote: I think it's time for me to take up shaving again. Where do you guys like to buy your DE safety razors and feather blades?
I get mine from Amazon, just search for whatever blade brand you want.

New Electric blades = $29 and mine lasted 3-4 years. After replacing them I realized they needed replacing about a year ago.
Using the electric shaver, stropping and drying will make your blades last quite a bit longer than 2X as long. In my case it was 4X as long plus I got a much more comfortable shave and my blade is still good. I'm still comparing it to the new blade and I'm still preferring the comfort and closeness of the shave of the old blade over the new blade.
3 bladed razors shave closer, are more comfortable and give fewer nicks than a safety razor so you'd be taking a step backwards in all departments to go to a safety razor.
My son-in-law has a titanium beard and no electric razor has worked plus his blades crapped out on him weekly, but he's on 3 months at the moment with the patented new GRM shaving system.

So w/o stroping, cleaning, and electric razor, your blades lasted 3 months?
Stropping plain works. Ive got a manly beard, and it kills a gillete in a few shaves. Stropping on my forearm has made a huge difference. Its lasted at least 2 weeks of everyday (cept sunday) shaves. Its awesome.
Joey
I shave maybe once a week. Sometimes twice. Basically I let it grow in a bit or I generally cut the E36 M3 out of myself.
Thanks to the tips in the previous shaving thread about stropping, drying the blade, and shaving after a shower, etc.....my blades (gillete mach 3) are now lasting me months instead of weeks and I am getting a much better shave. I agree, it is awesome.
Also the cheap ass barbasol works way better than that edge shaving "gel" crap
Thank you GRM

Well I've always dried them off and stored them properly, but yes I could get 3 months out of the 3 bladed razors. I won't say that a lot of the time I had comfortable shaves, but they were bearable.
My son-in-law was one of those people who changed blades weekly and complained for about half a week but now he's going on 3 months and says the comfort level is still very good.
I've been wanting to try a straight razor or a safety razor myself. I shave my entire head every 2-3 days as well as my chin/upper lip/neck area and those fusion power blades sure are pricey. They last me pretty long though.
I know some ppl advocate storing them in mineral oil or something after shaving, others have their blades cryo treated. Hardcore.

Are you kidding? Have you used a DE razor. The only time I nicked my self was when I was in a huge hurry and was still new. I can shave around my mouth now with no worries at all. Before I would cut myself EVERY time.
I call shenanigans on those cheap Bic's lasting months on anything more than a girlie beard Seriously, I've tried every disposable out there and I never got more than a week with a semi-comfy shave. I'll never use anything but a DE from now on. WELL worth the money.
Heck, I just shaved, because I kinda wanted to. It's not a chore anymore because I'm not bleeding when I'm done and quick.
What's a DE?
Ditto on the cheap disposables. I think the plastic that holds the blades must not hold the blades as stable as those like the Fusions, etc.
Don't do the disposables, get you a 3 bladed Mach 3. That's the only one I can get to last and be comfortable.
Safety razors rule. Westcoastshaving.com for supplies, they have a couple sampler packs of blades that come out ridiculously cheap. Safety blades feel different brand to brand so this is a cool, cheap way to find one that likes your face. My only issue is right up close to my nose, I make some pretty funny faces in order to get that area. Smoothly shaved cheers! Russel

DE is double edge, A.K.A safety razor. When I mentioned using disposables, I was talking about Mach 3, Fusion and the like. I'll never buy one of those again.
