Facebook is a decent way to keep up with groups, and excellent way to creep on women you haven't seen since high school, and a fabulous place to follow fringe groups and find out which of your friends is out there.

I know.  And that's why I love this board.

To me, it's kind of like teaching college kids vs. HS- where there's a difference between wanting to learn vs. just being there.  The "lame" questions are far more honest, and the replies are engaging.

This is a great board.

Facebook for me exists to keep up with some friends who are overseas now, organize events with friends (it is just so much easier to make and event and invite people then go through my contacts hopefully find all my friends numbers send a text, receive multiple text back asking the same question etc), or mass group messages with friends (like I have one for our weekly DnD game to organize it each week, one for just random posting and a couple others), Marketplace (which has basically killed Craigslist) and car pages/ bike groups.

But really messenger, events and Marketplace are the things keeping me on FB. They are just so much much easier (events/ messenger for big group messages) or better selection (Marketplace) that any negative of FB is outweighed for me. I rarely scroll through my feed (that is what I have Instagram for...)

But this already exists.  Why do I need to find the doppleganger of forums I'm already a part of?

OK, we get it, you're too hip, or too smart, or too whatever for Facebook.  Enjoy a cookie and a sense of smug self-satisfaction.

I'm on Facebook and I have reestablished contact with friends from high school and college (I've been out of HS for more than 35 years at this point) via Facebook.

I found out one of those friends has a Miata.  He is not otherwise a "car guy" but when I saw he had one, I got him interested in trying autocross, advised him on sporty tires to buy for it, and talked him through replacing a side mirror when his wife knocked one off on the garage door.  We've rekindled the relationship, I've expanded his sportscar experience, and we've expanded each others' musical tastes.

That never would have happened without FB becuase the intersection of forums he visits and those I visit is otherwise nonexistent.  As a non-car-guy, he would have tried to find information on his Miata, been put off by the usual response to non-car-people on automotive forums, and given up.  He probably never would have heard of autocross (let alone tried it) without seeing me post pictures of me doing it in my Miata.  He never would have known I have a Miata.

That is just one of dozens of similar stories, large and small, that I've experienced on FB over the last 10+ years.  I've reestablished contact with many people I would not have otherwise.  I have made friends with people I've never met in 3D because we share common interests or sense of humor.  But it's still just another forum you can participate in or not as you see fit.

That's one thing I never figured out how FB even formed- before it happened, all of the forums I am a member of were in place- some for many, may years.  How in the world did that place become the replacement of forums that already existed?

How does anything replace anything that already exists?  By adapting or providing additional value or expanded audience.  Or maybe the original place changed and sucks now, or a splinter faction moved on to a different format.  By extension of your logic there should only ever be the original forum on any given topic since all others are redundant.

If the internets want to harvest that data well....good, you are the consumer or you are the commodity, as Im not paying for it Im the commodity.  I dont want to pay for it so I am ok with being the commodity (same can be said for most internet forums as well)

I haven't even been trying to troll them, but Facebook appears to have collected enough misinformation that whoever is the consumer should probably demand a refund on me.

My guess is the lower barrier to joining - clicking a "join" button is fewer hoops to jump through than joining a forum. I don't find the Facebook groups provide a better experience themselves, though - they don't have the forums' ability to serve as an archive, or if they do it is much harder to access properly. They also don't handle attached files properly like decent message board software.

Agreed as an archival and search soluiton FB sucks the big one (so did our favorite board until they learned how to integrate google search) I suspect its by design, they dont want to be a repository of knowledge, they want to create an environment to foster discussion.  You can only gather new data points by having new discussions.  If everyone searches and reads the old data points they (FB) gain nothing from the transaction.

I generally agree Facebook Groups are not as useful as a technical tool as traditional forums are. Facebook is more focused on the "now" vs being an archive of information.

That said, Facebook is just a tool and like any tool can be abused. It is up to the one using the tool.  In general, I limit my "friends" to people I actually know outside of Facebook.

I'll have some kind of millenaial hypster drink.

My wife had FB for a little while- and it lead to a cool HS reunion.  Then it started to suck fast with all the crap all of her "friends" posted.  That's way before the advertising really got going.  She deleted it quickly following the reunion.

I do see that there have been some good things that came, and for twitter, too.  But for me, personally, what appeals to you does not appeal to me.  And seeing why people leave just confirms why I never joined.

Good that it works for you, but I'm to cool for scool.

Yeah Poopshovel: cheap, awesome GUITARS. If it wasn't for Facebook, I wouldn't have four of my favorite stringed instruments. Most I paid for any of them was $130 for my Epi Goth Explorer with its original case. The thing shreds!

NAAAAAAAAW BRAH!

I've already been distracted from my TRUCK search, and am, instead, looking at CRXs. Don't push me down another rabbit-hole!

Ironically, I just started following you on instagram today. Nice score on the Dokken tape!!!!! I grabbed "Beast from the East" for a dollar a few years ago, before cassettes were "cool" again.

Too bad you don’t have an account. You’re truly missing out on the fun - no not with the general BS of Facebook, but with the groups, and especially some of the secret/private groups. There’s several offhand I think you’d really enjoy.

Hey, that's real. I just sold a huge pile of 1G CRX/3G Civic stuff to a "kid" who's really active in that group for pennies on the dollar. He made it pretty clear that he was going to flip most of it and make his money back & then some, and keep some for himself, but it was cool to have ONE buyer, AND make him the next generation of "That guy who has all the weird 1st gen E36 M3."

Ha, now you can see all my retro-themed shenanigans that I don't typically post here! Fun Fact: That Dokken tape was the first tape I ever bought with my own money, back when I was 5 in 1987. Loved the Dream Warriors video which was on heavy rotation on MTV. My older sister swiped the tape long ago, so it's nice to have that one back. I have it on vinyl, too!

I feel my mullet sprouts tingling just thinking about that album.

The only problem is I've also found:

Under $3k: Multiple manual Fits, MINIs, and a Fiat 500.

Under $2k: A couple MP5's and an 87 CRX.

Under $1k: Festiva.

On the other hand, they are also posted by the kind of people who list things on FB Marketplace.

Dakotas are the only thing I've seen that rust harder than Mazdas.   And they either have the 3.7 POS or the 4.7 POS.

Disclaimer:  I almost bought a 5.2/5sp/tow package shortbed Dakota because 3.91 gears with a manual trans V8.  This is when they were new and their supernatural ability to corrode was not apparent.

I've had a few problems trying to buy terrible vehicles off of FB Marketplace, but to be fair, the same thing could have happened on any other platform. Two really stand out:

-Had a verbal agreement to buy a 1995 Ram 1500. Guy didn't want a deposit; I offered. Guy sold it to someone else. I was mad that I wasted my time.

-Was messaging back and forth with a guy on a... get this... $400 Dakota! I was literally on the way to go buy the thing when the kid messaged me that he changed his mind and was keeping it. That made me mad. It was a 1994 short bed 2WD with the Chrysler 2.5L 4 cylinder and a 5 speed. It was going to get the Turbo II treatment, but alas....

It was missing the bed and I couldn't get the seller to tell me if it had a title. So not really that much of an improvement.

I seem to be in the minority but I find it fairly useful. I am able to find out about and follow groups and events in NYC that may cause service disruptions and get more details than are normally available on their permits so I can plan for detours. I can also share info with coworkers who may not have easy access to company emails.

I also follow a number of comedians and bands for my own amusement. I've attended a number of shows I wouldn't have found out about otherwise.  Then there's the news and bullE36 M3 I read and share either because I found it interesting, funny, or I know someone who will be driven into a rage from it.

I am apologizing in advance for anyone that is losing brain cells from the nonsense that I've been sharing.

Agreed. Just saw something pop up for a comedian yesterday who will be here in April. I'll be buying my tickets tomorrow when they go on sale.

Facebook is what you put into it.  Not feeling "social"?  Fine, give a fake birthday, minimum information, use a car logo as your avatar.  But it's a great way to easily connect with my car friends, SCCA groups for rallycross and autocross, my 501st Legion Star Wars people...  And a quick way to share events to others.

Forums?  Except for this one and the calendar we use for 501st troop events, I rarely check the 15 or so forums I registered on anymore.

I'm 52, even my 72 year old mom likes it.  Although she's more cat memes and "My son is the most awesomest son" stuff.  Which is cool too.  laugh

Just be aware the search engine is terrible.

Seriously its like they made the search engine to be one of the worst. That and the selling groups not sorted in chronological order, instead with Top Posts and Recent Posts, but recent posts isn't really chronological, annoying. It's very easy to miss a for sale post with a rare part b/c their algorithm seems to hide it. Someone I know is always on the hunt for period correct rare honda stuff from the 90s and early 00s and he'll miss stuff I see, and I'll miss stuff he's seen. All in the same classifieds group too.
