Short version if you don't want to read through the article:
Irving, TX (kinda a suburb of Dallas). 14 year old brings a home made clock to school to show his engineering teacher. Then puts it back in his backpack. It beeps in English class, so he shows the English teacher. She said it looks like a bomb. He's sent to the principle, Irving police are called. They keep asking him what it is, he keeps saying a clock. Police and administrator say that he's told everyone it's a clock, but handcuff him and send him to juvi under the charge of a "hoax bomb".
Anyone wanna guess his name before reading the article? (the inflammatory part of this post, but had to be said.......)

Not sure why, but this depresses the hell out of me today.

It's Texas. They execute the mentally handicapped.
I saw this on facebook. This E36 M3 is insane. The ignorance of people in this country seems to get worse every damn day. I am not surprised that it is TX but it really could have been damn near anywhere.
Those public servants are morons.

That article made my blood boil. If accurate, some people need to be terminated from both the school and PD if they don't do the right thing and resign.

That seems to excuse any crazy-ass behavior in 'Murica
Sad to say, almost anyone that can build something electronic or mechanical or even drive a stick-shift these days is a OMG FREAK and must be up to no good.
Get a nice service job and buy your Chinese-made crap and move along people. Nothing to see here.
Pfft. Nothing new. Years ago a kid here was suspended for nibbling a pop-tart into the shape of a mountain he'd drawn in art class. A teacher thought it looked like a gun, went hysterical (because pop-tarts are so dangerous when loaded), so he was suspended under the zero tolerance policy.
Watched the press conference.
Chief of Police said it's standard procedure and that no charges will be filed. He'll be meeting with the kid's dad today and feels that the Irving Police department has an excellent relationship with the Muslim community.
The school board media person started by saying that the safety of our students is of the utmost importance. They thought it was a threat and reacted appropriately. And, that IF they release the pictures of the clock (although both referred to it as "the device"), that people's attitudes will change. Ended by saying the safety of ALL Irving students is of utmost importance.
Normally with stuff like this, I can be unbiased and see both sides. I don't always agree with both sides nor do I believe that no one is to blame, but can often see how things happen or can escalate. So, I don't generally get incensed as much as the general public does.
However, with this, I just can't see any reason for him to be handcuffed and hauled to juvenile hall.....Hence my rare posting of something like this.

To be fair, they are serving a public that has proven time and time again that they are hysterically allergic to even the slightest perceived risk, and who are backed by a huge pool of lawyers willing to get rich by pandering to those fears.
In other words, we've gotten exactly what we've consistently screamed for and voted for.
I read this as a story of innocence and youth wrongly lost.
Here is a kid who just wants to show off what he built and be proud of his capabilities. What he has now learned from this is that he has to think globally about his actions. He has learned the hard lesson that his good intentions will not always be seen as good intentions. Others want to pick fights where there is no fight.
I have one big wish, if we could get it from the media.
Race (color) and creed (religious affiliation) should never be reported.
If we are expected to not see race and creed then why must these be injected into the story.
I am not sure that his father's Islamic background is so important to the real story here but bringing it up sure helps to conjure up the rage on both sides of the debate.
I think the story of "boy wrongly treated like criminal" is enough without all the added side drama.

Because passive-aggressive inflammatory information generates conflict. Conflict generates "news". "News" generates revenue. Lather, rinse, repeat.
I am going to sound old here...
when I was in school, if somebody had done that, the kid would have been asked to report to the principle's office. There the clock would be put on the principle's desk and he would be told not to bring something in like that again. The parents would then be called to come and get the clock and the kid would get detention.

Honestly if an educator can't tell the difference between a home built clock and a IED they need to work on their education. Add in the fact that the kid TOLD them it was a clock I see this as more dumbing down of the general population.
example: couple of years ago I got called up to an area in my facility because "explosive contraband" had been found and the staff didn't know what to do with it. I arrived to find the staff member pointing at the dangerous item on her desk. It was a 9mm luger round that the gentleman had carried in his pocket for 50 YEARS for good luck. He and I had a good laugh at the panic he had caused.
That kid should be thankful. He will now not to have to worry about paying for college. The town and school district of Irving will be providing enough "restitution" that he'll be set for life.
Short version.
School system over reacts to nothing.
Why are you surprised? This is the new normal.

Any parent with kids in public school is doing their kids a disservice.
