And that would be the panicked group responsible for the flashing lights, alarm and brake application when there is anything in front of the car.
Not good.

The ABS and TC in my 05 Colorado is terrifying. The TC just shuts the engine down. Don't mind that truck behind you, we have determined that all acceleration shall cease. The ABS does the same for the brakes. I used to turn off the TC every time I drove the truck.
Two years later, they built my 07 Silverado. The TC and ABS in it is brilliant. Just enough, but never too much.
In reply to Toyman01 :
I pulled the ABS fuse on my 2000 Silverado after the second time it tried to kill me by shutting off all the brakes after I hit a pothole coming up to the highway.
And its all GM engineers fault, or the lawyers they sleep with. I have an 03 Volvo, and if the abs pump kicks in, I know two things- 1- Something is slick, and 2- I still have the strength to push on the brake pedal, so the other wheels with grip will continue to slow me down.
The traction control in the BRZ was pretty paranoid..................even with 255 Star Specs on the car.
traction control in the rover can be a bit much, the ABS is paranoid. The Traction Control and ABS on the Abarth is about perfect, I give .005% less than what BMW's is. I also like the fact I can turn the TC completely off if I want with just a long press of the ESP button
In reply to Streetwiseguy :
The Colorado wasn't quite that bad, but it could get pretty freaky at times.
The 07 Silverado is really quite good. TC will give you just enough power to barely slip the tires, but not enough to light them up. You can just hear them chirp. The ABS is the same. It will allow just the slightest amount of slip. I've been pretty impressed with it considering how bad the Colorado is.
I had a Ford Edge rental this week. The automatic lane keeping system is terrifying. It tries to kill you and unless you turn off thd system (comes back on every start up) you end up fighting it for who is steering the car. Worst thing I’ve ever experiences in a new car. Just after it is the dial that replaced the gear selector. What is the idea of these?
Adaptive cruise worked great though.
Similar issues with the active cruise control getting spooked by passing trucks, overpasses, etc.
What people don't seem to realize is that as more of these advanced "autonomous" functions are incorporated, we're making cars more like horses-- sometimes they are smart, other times they just act like the stupid prey animals they evolved to be.
The time when a plastic bag blowing across the road causes a car to completely loose its mind may not be that far away from us.

Yeah...Stil recall the first time I tried to pull out of a gravel parking lot into fast moving traffic and found a bit of gravel on the road! It does strange things in the snow also; the car keeps moving, but much slower than I would manage if I were in control. LH turns at busy intersections require that I turn the TC off.

My thing was always trying to get out into traffic with a turn, like you mentioned.
If it would just allow a little slip, but nope, any slip detected, let's cut power for 1 full second and then when you get power back, since you're full throttle it kicks in again.

Same here, though I didn't think the ABS was all that bad
Our work Transit is like that. Doesn't even have enough power to squeal the stupid tires but get stuck in a ditch because of some ice and the traction control kills pretty much all the power so you stay stuck in the ditch.
I have yet to find the need to turn the TC off on my FiST. Some time the light will blink telling me the wheels are spinning .
In a short distance I gain traction. The one time and it was to see what happens, My hill was covered with slush. Almost to the top all power killed. But this was a case of no traction regardless. This was on my '13 SE so I couldn't turn the TC off. I also found that if you can keep moving at light throttle the TC won't cut power even though the light is blinking.
When it is slippery the ABS is too touch and ineffective. Threshhold braking seems to work better

The ABS on the Colorado was a huge improvement over my 97 E Series van. That one put me in the middle of an intersection one time because I ran over a stick while braking.
Drove a Mazda 6 rental last year, and it decided I wasn't pressing the brake hard enough. So it went into full ABS panic stop mode until the car came to a full stop.
Even after my foot was completely off the brake.
On the freeway.
Absolutely terrifying.

I feel like mine is relatively permissive of wheelspin - so long as you're pointed dead straight ahead. Once you add any steering angle to the equation, like pulling out into traffic, as you mention, that's a big NOPE. Cuts power and drags the inside rear brake too. I just end up putting it in sport mode more often than not, although as far as I can tell it doesn't seem to allow any more slip angle than usual. Winter driving = pedal dance time.
I've driven multiple new cars with driver nannies and all I can say to the manufacturer is please allow us owners to chose to disable this useless crap where we don't have to reset every time I get in the vehicle. The only vehicle I have with a distraction/accident device is the traction control on the Frontier and I have to remind myself to turn it off every time I get in the vehicle and of course I forget until I need to tromp on the go pedal.
My 2006 MX-5 has amazeballs ABS and equally horrifying traction control. I have to remember to turn it off every time I start the car or it will try to kill me pulling out into traffic (and this is an STR prepped car on RE-71s) it probably cuts the power to 1/3 of what i want. It moves but horrifyingly slowly as oncoming cars barrel toward my door. I've cursed Mazda engineers far too often.
Better than my Jetta tdi that didn't even have traction control defeat.. that was awesome when I got stuck once.

Ehrmagerd... TRUTH.
I drove a new CRV to NYC this past spring. Going up in the day it was great. Getting into the city in traffic was a nightmare. Not because of the traffic, because of the radar-controlled accident prevention crap. Just let me drive.
Then, on the way home it was 2AM on the highway. No one for miles. Every time I passed under a road sign, it thought I was about to die. It didn't apply the brakes, but it screamed at me and flashed lights. I also couldn't figure out how to shut off the auto high beams. With the concrete barrier between me and oncoming traffic, it didn't "see" oncoming traffic and shut off the highs. Every trucker going East was blinded by my high beams.
A brand new car shouldn't cause heart attacks. I truly hated driving that car. I can't possibly imagine how those highly dysfunctional "automatic" things could possibly prevent an accident, and in several situations, it made choices for me that I had to correct to PREVENT an accident. I was constantly fixing its screwups.
My cars: 66 Bonneville, 67 Lemans, 94 Mazda B4000, 96 Impala SS. They let me drive. They don't drive for me.
