My kids dog died today. I'm not a big dog fan, but damn, the kids sure did love her. I'm gonna miss her too. She wasn't that old. I'm wondering if she didn't tangle with a snake.

It truly sucks telling an 11yo and a 7yo their dog passed away.

We have three dogs, they are like kids to us, I'm not looking forward to the next few years, two are over 11 years old.

Sympathies to the children

Sorry to hear about the loss.. you never know how much a pet means to you until they are gone. So much like people.

I hate to say it.. but some popular breeds are living shorter and shorter lives due to a limited gene pool. Used to be larger dogs lived around 10 to 12 years and smaller breeds seemed to live forever.

I know Rotties seem to only live about 7 years

She was a Rottweiler and a little over 12. I still wasn't expecting it. Usually I can tell when they are getting old and can prepare the kids for the inevitable. Not this time though.

I prefer mutts. I don't have pets, I have babies.

One of our dogs died last week at 14. She was an orange 90lb mutt that we picked up from the pound 13 years ago. We all miss her. It sucks.

Our Basset hound is like our baby. He just turned 2 so I am not worried about how old he is just yet, but he does get into things he probably shouldn't and here in GA, there are plenty of things to get into that will easily kill a dog.

Snakes are among my many worries.

Oh, sorry about the narcissism in my first post. I realized that I didn't even type a word about your loss.

I can imagine how it must feel to lose the dog, but I have no idea the pain it would cause to have to explain it to two young children.

I am truly sorry, man!

Dogs and kids go together like peanut butter and jelly. I know it must suck for you seeing your kids sad about losing their friend.

If you decide you want to try over there are a ton of dogs out there looking for new families.

If you want a pet that is going to live a long life.. do NOT get a purebreed.

Very sorry to hear that. A good pet isn't just an animal, it's part of the family. I always go hug my pets after threads like this.

Yeah that's really tough. 12 years is a good amount of time for a Rotty, but it always sucks when they get taken from you so abruptly. Our last pet got sick over the course of about 12 hrs - went from healthy to dead. My wife was a vet student at the time and she couldn't do anything about it, and we never got any good answers. It just took time to put it behind us.

Our condolences.

my bird is currently sitting on my keyboard squaking at me. She does this when she feels I am not spending enough time with her. She "protects" the keyboard from my fingers until I pick her up.

I have had her about 5 years.. and could not imagine life without her right now.

Like your badly missed dog.. pets are more than just companions.. they really do become a member of the family.

I am sorry for your loss to both you and your family.
I know this may not be the best comfort but be thankful for the quickness. Two weeks short of two years ago, I had to make that decision. A hard decision, that had taken weeks to come to after a year of degredation in his health. As they say, you will know when but I really did not like that "when" came on the eve of my birthday.
I still miss him, Louie.
He was a pound mutt that I got as a puppy - sort of a 20lb pommerainian terrior mix. He developed what seemed to be a tumor on his spine and progressively lost use of his back legs. Video take about 6 month before the end.

The video was taken as part of ordering and getting him fitted for a wheelchair type set of rear wheels.
This type of thing:

I miss him every day.
