I've seen more than one knifed roof where the damn door was unlocked. They didn't even bother trying it.

I tended to leave the RX-7 vert's top down when the weather was nice out, or left the windows down if I had the top up. The steering wheel had a quick-release so I could take it with me (got lots of funny looks carrying that around...) and I'd pull the faceplate off the stereo. Sure, if you knew what you were doing there was a modest bit of money to be made if you know just what parts to snatch from the car, but most thieves would just look and see they could neither steal the car nor do anything with the stereo and go right on by. Worried more about the possibility of drunk idiots puking in it than thieves...

was it a BMW?

my story[ies]... Are all Trenton NJ based... My wifes 71 Nova was broken into to steal her speakers... and my 72 Capri a wheel was stolen....

I will NOT leave any valuables in my car... not a single one. The one serious negative to an older hatchback is little places to hide stuff...

Well, yes. In an ideal world, we'd all be able to leave our gold bricks anywhere we want to. In the world I live in, that is an unrealistic dream.

Some people take have a thought process like: "If it isn't nailed down, it's mine. If I can pry it loose, it isn't nailed down."

Worst part of the story is the fact that a piece of E36 M3 thief, meth slinger has a baby seat in his car.

A friend of mine used to say "the difference between a thief and an opportunist is a locked door." I never knew for sure, but I think he sometimes considered himself an opportunist.

Tonneau cover, then again, a friend just had the two most expensive pieces of glass on his Subaru wagon smashed out and the ~$1500 laptop bag under the cover grabbed. A similar "parked for 5 minutes" situation.

Still pretty sure he was more likely a drug user than a drug slinger and was just trying to make up an excuse for being there.

Although that's worse because a drug dealer's baby would at least have a rich daddy.

Gotta be careful with that in gun states.

Never would have DREAMED of doing that in the USofA.

You know who dies because of gun violence in Canada? For the most part, gangbangers killing gangbangers. Its a good system ;)

And the guy was pretty non-threatening/beta. There are other criminals around that I wouldn't have tried it with either.
