Apparently mountain biking, BMX and ultimate frisbee just weren't enough ways to injury myself so I bought a Skateboard. I haven't touched a Skateboard since middle school but I saw one of these Elements for sale that I wanted back in the day.

I convinced myself I could skateboard in middle school/high school, but the reality was that I just really wanted to be part of the scene.

Now I'm feeling nostalgic for some Tony Hawk jams:

Best of luck to you and I hope you break as few bones as possible.

Rad. I used to have that board. Along with the classic Muska rising sun, and a few other classics. I had to give it up permanently after surgery, but I do miss it. Have fun.

I understand that the idiom "break a leg" is commonly used in the context of theatre to wish a performer "good luck."  Perhaps less appropriate here.  Therefore, "good luck!"

When I started snowboarding I bought some plastic wrist protectors, they Velcro to your wrist and palm to keep it from breaking.

Money well spent.  Good luck and learn to tuck & roll.

I once spent a day first practicing learning to ollie and then learning to swing a golf driver. That was the most I have ever challenged my coordination skills in a single day.

Wear gear. Take it slow. Remember that you don't bounce anymore.

I'm kind of glad I only got into park skating in my 30's when I was no longer worried about looking cool or trying to do really impressive stunts. Taking things slow and wearing gear greatly reduces your injury risk. Worst I've gotten from skateboarding is a major bruise on my hip because I manage to fall on the EXACT SAME SPOT EVERY TIME when I bail on top of coping.

I also suggest avoiding rails. Only significant injury I've gotten that proper gear and bailing technique couldn't mitigate was losing my footing over a rail. Bashed the crap out of my ribs.

My body aches just reading that.

I just realized the skateboard I have turns 40 this year. Currently hanging in my living room after buying a display hanger during one of the pandemic Zoom gatherings and DSW showed one.  I'll take it down and roll around the street for a bit.  Then I remember I'm 50, already do enough sports with injury potential and put it back on the wall.

Go fast, don't wear pads.  Bones heal, chicks dig scars.

Building a ramp in a backyard is about the only way I could get back into it. A good 8' ramp with 6' transition would be big enough to be endlessly entertaining and gentle enough (providing you land in transition) to not leave too many marks. I don't have a backyard right now so I'm still safe from todays lumber prices. A pool might be more fun, but way less forgiving. All the parks around this part of the country are concrete. The grip is amazing, until you fall. Wood ramps let you slide when you fall.

The last serious injury I had was due to a bicycle accident.

Everything is dangerous if you use it wrong enough.

I spent a week on vacation in Washington DC in a wheelchair because of a skateboard. I haven't been on one since.

Love to watch people ride them but there is zero chance I'll ever set foot on one again.

Until a mountain biking accident a couple of years ago, my two most severe injuries were sustained on a slalom waterski. One involved stitches. And yes, multiple instances.

I wear a helmet wakeboarding. Water doesn't lessen the effects of a concussion. I know that now.

Wouldn't have helped me :(

I used to use a skateboard to deliver papers in the 80s. Great tool for the job, and I could do a four wheel drift. No tricks, though.

Then I fitted it with a mount for a windsurfer sail but luckily didn't spend much time testing that, as it undoubtedly would have ended badly. I'll bet it would have been exciting.

It seems like the level of risk of bodily injury in fairly ordinary mountain biking is similar to spinning out of control next to a wall in a car.

I picked up a used skateboard from a thrift store a while ago, the deal was too good to pass up, I told myself it could be a practical means of transportation in some situations...I rode them a bit as a teenager, didn't learn any sick tricks but I didn't maim myself either.

Good for you, man! I wish I could still skate. Back in middle school, I used to shred it up with my friends basically every day. Great times! Last time I tried skating in earnest was in college, and after about 5 minutes, I had wrecked myself so bad that I never got back on a board. I still have a few in the garage just in case I want to relive the old days someday. Definitely wear protection (helmet, pads, etc).
