Yep, a little bit late. I did start before Christmas, but dang that copper inlay gave me fits (I've never done an inlay before). I think it turned out ok - she wanted a wine Advent calendar but I came up with something that works all year.

Hey, that's awesome. I'm an amateur wood butcher myself. That's oak, is it not? Tell me how you did the inlay. Is that copper wire?

Thanks! According to the label at the store it's mahogany. But I wouldn't be able to the difference between this and a lot of other hardwoods. I also struggle a lot with wood names since everything has two or more common names. Mahogany is also probably called brown oak or something like that.
The inlay is copper wire (I stripped some old 12g solid house electrical wire). I tried a bunch of methods, but what finally worked for me was to get the mini router attachment for my Dremel and cut a channel. Then I pounded the wire from round to flat-ish, bent it, and layed it on its side in the channels. A few quick taps of the hammer to set it, and then super glue to hold it all in place. Finally I sanded it down with 40-60-80-120-220-400-800 grit. You can see a couple places where the random orbital caught a chunk of something and made curly qs in the face grrr.
I also wish I went a bit darker on the stain, but oh well.
The copper is almost all in one plane so it is cool when light hits it just right and all the words shine up.

Ah, yes! I see the mahogany now. I once used a piece for a small project, and it looked just like that. I suspect that freehanding the groove for the inlay and getting that wire to lay flat in it presented quite the challenge. Well done!
Awesome work! I can't imagine how many hours went into the copper inlay.
I do think it would have been funny to put "Today," "Also today," and "...probably also today" on the shelves. Too many words but still funny.

Oh man she would have liked that! Maybe for next year I'll make little covers for the shelves.
