Anybody done it sans-boat? Taking mama and baby to the beach in a few weeks and drunken late-night creek crawlin seems like a good idea. They have little LED lights that strap to your head at the HD. Is this enough, or do I need some crazy strap a generator to my back-type-riig? Regardless, I'll post pics of a berkeleying trident stuck to my foot in a couple weeks.

You'll be fishing for the wrong stuff, in the wrong place, with the wrong tackle.

Never tried it sans-boat. I'll tune in for foot spearing action, gopro cam recording the excitement for extra bonus points.

^ This. Two head rigs: one for light, one for GoPro. It must be done.

Have you ever dove at night? There's not much light penetration in the daytime, much less at night, so whatever up you bring down there better be pretty powerful or you won't be seeing much past your nose.

Have done it with Coleman lantern before. One person carries lantern just over the top of ankle to shin deep water, the other with the gig. Wasn't a problem.

This ought to be interesting.

Which beach? You get the best illumination if you can submerge the light underwater.

Make sure you shuffle step, you don't want to get tagged by a stingray.

Edisto/Edingsville Beach SC, and yeah, I'm familiar with the Stingray Shuffle. It's the one thing I regret not doing last time we were there. "It's 2AM, low tide, I'm a little hammered, let's go fishin." Only E36 M3ty part is that mama wants to stay ON the beach this time, so it'll be a long, drunk bike ride to a good tidal creek (last place had a dock on a tidal creek, 5 minute walk from Eddingsville Beach.)

That sounds like fun. I have only gigged carp from a rowboat or canoe. A small car battery and a headlight work well, but I would not want to carry all of that weight. I would try the brightest light that you can strap to your head. Have fun.

Damn. I could probably whip one of these together for 1/4 of the price. Wonder what kind of bulb they're using.

If the water is deep enough, get an innertube with a board strapped to it. Place a car battery on the board. Get the smallest sealed beam light you can and make the light on a stick, like the one you linked. You could also carry a cooler on the innertube for refreshing cold drinks.

We always used a john boat but seeing as I have stepped on the damn things before, I don't see why you couldn't do it walking. Just move slow and walk against the current so you don't cloud the water where you are looking.

As far as lighting, I've used Coleman lanterns and 12V flood lights. We had a rack that hung off the bow of a john boat that held two lanterns about 6" off the water. After drowning a couple of lanterns due to waves, we switched to two 12V flood lights. They were cheaper to replace and wouldn't quit when dunked. Pick up one of those 12 rechargeable spots, or even a good flashlight might work. Or better yet, a couple of good flash lights strapped to the gig. That way you always have light where you are aiming.

My dad and I went out one night when I was probably around 15. We didn't get any flounder, but did end up with 5, 5gal buckets of big mullet. They were kind enough to jump in the boat after my dad walked in behind a school of them in a small creek. I was holding the boat across the end of the creek. As he headed back to the boat, they started to run and when they got to the boat they jumped. I think the smallest mullet was 12". I had bruises from head to toe. We cleaned fish until 2:00am. Also had smoked mullet for lunch the next day. Mmm. Time to go find the cast net and dig out the smoker.

Yeah, I did pretty well with the cast net last time we were there. Nothing big enough to smoke, but I never paid for bait! You can throw them on the beach, right?

In SC, you can throw them anywhere as long as you aren't baiting. I usually throw off my parents dock. If you are looking for shrimp and mullet, the muddier the better. Tidal creeks are your best bet. Find a bridge you can park near. If it's a good site, the locals will be there at low tide for shrimping and at high tide for fishing.

Thanks!!! I wouldn't dare tread on local turf. I'll find the bait, and it looks like I'll be stuck surf fishing. Never had much luck with that, but I gotta think there's sheepshead in those groins, and that's one of my FAVORITE fish. I really enjoy the hell out of inshore wading, and I really hate catching sharks in the same water my baby is swimmin in. I know they're there regardless, but catching 'em really freaks me out.
