I was wondering, where did the love of stacks come from? I assumed it was emulating a big rig but I heard one time that on drag trucks it was to get the soot cloud up high. For the benefit of the dude in the other lane.
Was it always just a fashion statement?

I don't like stacks either but I must say I'm a little surprised to see the personal attacks on this guy/girl. Somebody could say disparaging things about us because we drive lowered gay men's cars or stupid German cars that run on veggie oil.
But who here would do that?

Some little wiener-guy I suppose
so, what's the word on gas engine stacks?
I always figgered them as vertical side pipes

Semi-relevant to our interests:
STACKS!

Daaaaaaaang!
I think the love came from wanting to be like their childhood hero, the Rubber Duck, but not having the skills to actually drive a semi.

Funny. But at the same time, annoying, because my car still has to pass an emissions test, and that guy doesn't
While I respect your deduction, just because you can see his exhaust doesn't make it bad, and just because you can't see yours doesn't make it good.
People associate the smell and the appearance with "bad." Since about 2008, the EPA and CARB require diesel light-truck emissions to comply the same as cars. There is a good chance that the F350 sitting next to you at the light is as clean as the Prius in the commuter lane doing 45 mph.
If the F350 is burning biodiesel, its cleaner than the Prius in the commuter lane by a LOT.
It was funny for about 3 seconds but then I found it sad

You're surprised some dingbat driving around a suburban area dumping diesel fuel into the sky and then trying to turn that into a joke about the Prius is catching flack?
He put that out there so pot shots are pretty obvious fair game. Plus, I mean, look at it.
I would replace the word prius with Democrat.
Uh Oh, I think I just floundered

I see stacks in pick ups and see wasted bed space...

No, ripping on the guy for stacks, for wasting bed space, for spewing pollutants is one thing. But attacking him sexual prowess or ability makes us look worse than the stacks make him look.
Some trucks wear stacks better than others

Same.
But then again, the pickups with the stacks are usually painted all nice, rolling on 22" chrome wheels, and running like a 16" lift.
