I like where this is going.
If you are dorks like me, and are into Prog Metal (and even if you are not), check out Anubis Gate. Their last two albums are two of the best albums I have heard in a long time. They are like a less pretentious Dream Theater with melodies and riffs that will stick with you forever.
If you are into Doom, check out Pallbearer. I've mentioned them before, but out of the recent new wave of Doom bands, they are the best. Heavy as a mountain, haunting, and meaningful music.
The newest Paradise Lost is great!
A local band called Magic Circle is really great. Another traditional Doom-style band, and they have the classic Sabbath sound nailed down better than Sabbath does these days. They just put out a new one and it is amazing.
On Ghost...
I saw them with Mastodon and Opeth a few years ago, and they seemed like a cut rate Mercyful Fate to me. They were kinda boring to me, but I totally understand why people dig them.

I will check them out, sounds right up my alley, thanks.
Speaking of DT, did you ever listen to other older prog metal bands like Symphony X, Angra, Eldritch, etc.?
I just thought of more recommendations:
Anacrusis - Screams and Whispers (cool STL area prog-thrash)
Dan Swano - Moontower (Moog-synth-laced doomy death-metal)
Edge of Sanity - Crimson (one long progressive death metal song - another Dan Swano project)
In reply to JamesMcD:
I really dig Symphony X. I actually put them in front of Dream Theater in my eyes. In fact, I put a lot of prog bands in front of them. Growing up around Boston, all the Berklee College of Music dweebs were always verbally dryhumping Dream Theater, and while I do like them (I've seen them a couple times, amazing live!) the pretentiousness just drives me crazy. And that's coming from a musician!
Pretty much anything Dan Swano touches is great. Moontower is really solid.
More stuff:
October Tide: Excellent Death/Doom. Big riffs and super heavy.
Katatonia: They are like a more mellow October Tide with clean vocals. Very chill, will make you relax.
Carcass: Good ol' fashioned Death Metal. Heartwork is one of my favorite albums ever, and their newest one is great. Members of this band went on to play in Arch Enemy, who used to be good, but don't do it for me anymore.
Dark Tranquility: Melodic Death done very well. They have been around forever.
Ihsahn: Solo stuff from one of the guys in Black Metal pioneers Emperor. Really, really good stuff. Heavy prog influence, and saxophones? Yup, sounds weird, but it works. Oh, and his backup band is...
Leprous: If you ever listened to The Mars Volta back in the day, then check these guys out. Very interesting Prog stuff from excellent musicians.

Silverfleet- is this the Magic Circle you speak of?

Tickets were sold-out before they went on sale for the public. I'm bummed. It's always a great show.
This equals much bass envy: https://youtu.be/3Kat6WNUS-k

Yes, yes it is. That's off their new one. I saw them a couple years back in a small burrito joint that has metal shows from time to time. Talk about random.
The Melvins are probably another band that needs to be added. They don't really fit into a specific genre, but their production quality and arrangements are almost always top notch. They kick ass live too.

Can't forget Ufommamut either. They are kind of a doom drone band from Italy. Let it build. It can go from very chill to brain crushing and back.

And Pantera "Walk" just comes on Pandora..... it's gonna be a good day!
There should be a whole thread on Pantera alone. Nuff said.
Back on topic, probably the thing closest to metal I listen to is Tool these days. I used to be a big Dream Theater head but got burned out on them (saw them live and still one of the best shows i've seen). I can still listen to Liquid Tension Experiment since there are no vocals.
I can give or take Metallica also. I will throw a couple recommendations out there:
Black Country Communion (probably more hard rock but sound like Deep Purple)
Ruby the Hatchet (imagine Black Sabbath/Deep Purple collision with a chick singer)
Them Crooked Vultures (Dave Grohl, John Paul Jones, Josh Homme)
Muse (I know they aren't really metal per say but they have intricate arrangements).
Throwdown. I absolutely love every song on the album Deathless. No skips.
Yes everyone's suggestions are spot on \m/
I'm still trying to catch up with all the suggestions in this thread!
The Sword, Elder and Magic Circle are by far my favorites. Freedom Hawk, Mastodon and Wolfmother are in there too.
Any other suggestions along these lines?
Most of this is a bit mild for my personal tastes but i like disturbed and ffdp as far as bands who get radio play.
Machine head and hatebreed are also on the mellow end of the spektrum for me.
Have we mentioned The Atomic Bitchwax yet? I totally stumbled upon them the other night--I was looking for a friend's BMX video.
They refer to themselves as super stoner metal.

Also, if you go to their site you can download a bunch of their earlier albums for $5 total--yes, $5 for hours of killer, sludgy music.
The first video that sucked me in:

I figured you'd know them. I really like their stuff.
Here's a few other bands on the "Stoner" spectrum you guys may like:
-Royal Thunder: From Georgia, and they are female-fronted. I saw them a few years ago, and they are really good.
-Gypsyhawk: Mix The Sword with Thin Lizzy, and you get these guys. Yup, it's good.
-VYGR: Really, really heavy, yet sludgy and melodic. If i was hurdling through space in some weird craft to an unknown planet, I'd be blasting this.

I forgot about the Atomic Bitchwax too. I think they are a stoner rock supergroup for a lack of better terms. Some of the other members used to be in Monster Magnet. Monster Magnet might be worth checking out too. I listened to them in high school. Fu Manchu, Orange Goblin, Sheavy, Kyuss are some other stonerish bands to check out.
They might be more on the hard rock side but Them Crooked Vultures put out a killer album a few years ago. Its a trio with Dave Grohl, John Paul Jones and Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age. More of a side project than anything.

I bought the new Armored Saint mp3 album on Amazon a few weeks ago on a lark. I haven't heard these guys since 1984, good stuff.
I will apologize in advance for decimating your productivity for the day.

Here's one more to kill your evening as well.

We recently saw Royal Thunder open for The Sword. Yeah, killer performance.
Kyuss was mentioned earlier and Josh Homme tends to be the former member that continues to get the most attention, but some of the other members have done some great stuff over the years. Check out Brant Bjork and Nick Oliveri.
You guys are good! Even more fantastic suggestions!
I recently checked out Accept's newest album "Blind Rage"- it's darn good! I never cared for them back in the day...
I'm not a metal guy but this is a group led by a family friend. He is actually a classically trained musician. They are not bad I would say.
