My dad is 75.  And one of his hobbies is packing recycling containers as tight as posssible. So as an early Xmas present I gave him a canary knife. It's made for cutting up cardboard boxes and makes him super happy.   Now he spends his days cutting up boxes and planning how to stuff recycling wheelie bins.

ok kidding aside. This stupid knife is amazing.

I too share that hobby. I shake my head in disgust when my neighbor sets a large empty box at the curb for the garbage man. Cut that baby down!

FWIW, I packed my recycling bin too tight once and when they came to pick it up, nothing came out.

I am 58, and I pride myself on the volumetric efficiency with which I pack my recycle bin. Your father is a great man.

Same. My little one lights up when we hear the garbage and recycling trucks so I was watching as the monster arms did the BamBam and nothing came out.

Christmas is my favorite day of the year.  That's because I get to collect all of the used wrapping paper, flatten it, fold it, and organize it all to fit into the smallest space possible.

On December 26, I get to go to the recycling center when it opens at 7am.

I was about to poke fun, but cardboard is actually the waste with the largest recycling percentage at 81% vs everything else which is dramatically lower.

The "standard length" Canary cutters are awesome.  They also work really well on foam and thin plastic.

The short blade cutters are probably useful for something, but they are definitely not as good for hacking up a bunch of boxes.

You can still cut yourself on the serrated edge, and if/when you do it's like a super-nasty papercut.

Not to be an arsehat, but make sure the wrapping paper is actually recyclable before putting it in with the recycling.

Recycling was the first big scam to convince people they should buy crap and not feel guilty about it.  Carbon capture will be the next one.

When I was a kid we flattened and folded the wrapping paper, and then saved it to reuse the next Christmas.  Ultimate recycling!  smiley

Come on, man. A special knife just for cutting up cardboard? What ridiculous snake-oil gimmick will they think up next?

Oh, hold on a quick second -

Yeah, I might need me some of them...

Discussed this thread with Mrs FD, showed her the pterodactyl mobile,  and we agreed that we would need to order two of them. When I opened the shopping app, they were listed as unavailable.

sad

Edit: searched for Canary knife, found one listed with a sheath!

Two of them are in the cart now!

TIL I'm not the only 75 year old that works at volumetric efficiency when packing cardboard into recycling bins.  laugh
