So for the last few days my wife has been obsessed with the idea of getting another dog. Our dog Onyx is home all day be herself (7:45am-5:15pm), and Colleen is convinced that she's horribly bored during the day. She wanted a small-ish female that was old enough to not need too much training, and be house broken. So yesterday we went to an adoption event held at a local pet food store. We brought our dog to make sure that if we found one that they got along, but alas, we came up empty. We just didn't really connect with any of them.

Fast forward about an hour (after running a few errands), we're on our way home and see a dog just sitting on the side of the road near a busy highway in the pouring rain. We turned around to see if he had tags, and since he was on an off-ramp for the highway, we actually had to go around the block, wait at a light, get on the highway and take the exit ramp. Anyway, we do all that and he's still just sitting there. I pull over, my wife gets out, and he pretty much just walks up to her. Then my dog jumps out of the car, and they actually started licking each other's faces almost immediately.

We got him home and cleaned up (he smelled awful) and let him rest, then took him to the emergency vet to check for a chip. No collar, no chip, not neutered, doesn't know basic commands, not potty trained, and I don't think he's ever been in a car or on a leash, but he's about the sweetest little cuddler I've ever met. We're guessing he's around 6 months old. He's pretty skinny and was filthy, so he's either been loose for a while or wasn't well cared for from the beginning. I've notified all the people you're supposed to notify, but I'm really hoping no one comes forward.

Here he is after is bath. The poor little dude was exhausted, and slept pretty much all evening.

On our way to get him checked for a chip and get him a collar.

Here he is curled up with Onyx.

So yeah, if no one comes forward, we pretty much ended up with the exact opposite of what my wife wanted, a large male puppy. But she's already in love with him.

Looks like a german shepherd lab mix. Just keep the channels open and if he was lost, make sure he gets home. Otherwise, you have yourself a good home for him.

My 4yo german shepherd ran off last Wednesday night and I was pretty much devastated until word came midday Friday that he was found. Its the lowest of lows and highest of highs when it comes to pets. Strange thing is, when you rescue pets like that and get to keep them, they end up with a rather rare attachment to you. My 11yo german shepherd is that way, her world revolves around me.

A rescue. Nothing better than that. Great job and gl with the potty training.

Whether or not any one comes forward I think that should be your dog now. It's obvious no one was taking care of him, so even if someone did come forward I would not feel comfortable returning him to their care. Looks like you found a great dog!

I agree completely. Someone is going to have to have a REALLY good excuse as to why he was in the condition we was in. When he woke of from a nap last night he had the absolute biggest smile that I've ever seen on a dog. It was pretty clear that he hadn't been that happy in a long, long time.

While its not normally the case(thanks to the E36 M3pile humanity is now), an occasional few times can just be a lost dog. My 4yo GSD nearly fit the same bill after being lose a total of 36 hours.

I'm going to agree with Yamaha.. Young labs/GSDs aren't exactly known for being the brightest creatures on the planet. I lost mine once when I took him out at night, realized it was a touch colder than I expected, reached inside the door to grab some gloves and he was GONE. He "never" ran away, either, and I was always outside with him for hours at a time some days.

Definitely!

Thanks! He seems like a quick learner. After completely emptying his bladder on the kitchen floor when he first came into the house and having a few little dribbles last night, he finally peed outside (after about the fifth try) last night before bed. He's had a clean record so far today, and seems to really be getting the hang of this whole relieving himself while on a leash thing.

Cute little bugger! Probably good you ended up with a male. Females can have issues getting along....probably where the derogatory meaning of B word came from...

A small group of dogs escaped from a government research facility nearby. Watch out for increased web activity and plots to take over the world and you should be fine.

The best dogs I've ever had found me in much the same way yours has. Congrats on the new dog! I'll bet he fits in great.

Name should be "Slam." There's a 90s rap reference there. Look close.

Haha, Onyx (who was also a rescue) came with that name! But yeah, when we first got her, lots of jokes were made by my friends.

We've had two different people suggest we name him "Lloyd", because we found him next to the Lloyd Expressway. Colleen wants to name him "River", which just reminds me of a stereotypical hippy name, River from Firefly, and River Phoenix (in that order). None of which I think captures his personality.

Yep, same thing happened to me on Wednesday night.....never had the issue before, and a 1-2minute lapse of supervision was all it took. He wasn't even chasing anything.

Yep, the one and only! They've actually rebuilt part of it to eliminate a couple of the stop lights, and are currently working on doing that to another part of it. But don't worry, when the construction is complete, it will still have plenty of stop lights! What a dumb design.

Congrats! Sometimes when you stop looking, they will find you. And + 1000 internets for you rescuing a dog.

When we decided that we were going to adopt a dog last year, we hit up a few shelters, and the last one we hit before we gave up for the day happened to have a dog that was isolated from the general population. We asked about her and the miserable sow that was working at the shelter said she was "weird" and didn't get along with the other dogs at the shelter and was iffy with people.

She was dead wrong.

That dog ended up being the sweetest dog I have ever met, and we got to take her home a few days later. We have had her for almost a year and she rules.

Holly (or is it Holley?) sends her congrats as well!
