I just so happened to have a section of 1 inch copper pipe laying around and I saw this "copper" bowl cheap on eBay. Thought was drill a hole, solder it up and run with it. The "copper" bowl just looks a little different. No tarnish and these black scratches make me question if it's pureish copper. Am I over thinking?

Sanitize it a few times and send it. Based on material I suspect that whatever is going through it will do that job well enough.

You know I just thought maybe I should soak it in some vinegar and see how it cleans up.

Depends on the target audience for the beerbong.

Making a still?  If so, heck of a nice find for that copper bowl.

Can you sand it out?  With emery cloth?

Now I want to see the dumbest beer bong imaginable. The flabongo set the bar pretty high.

Copper itself is antimicrobial but I'm betting you know that already.

According to google if you scrub it with a mixture of salt and vineagar and it turns green after awhile it's real copper

It's the solder that's worrying me more than anything else.

A quality solder is perfectly sanitary. Most restaurants have copper piping with sweated joints.

Stampie, I was under the impression that it was only illegal if you were selling... just promise me you won't end up on reality tv.

If you use that as a funnel, you will definitely die.

Not sure on exact timing, though. The first sentence is the limit of my expertise. Sorry.

Say, if a feller was making a still he should use a stainless steel cooker vs copper. And a pot still isn't nearly as efficient as a reflux still.

I know nothing of this, I seen it on the internets.

Copper can get black stuff on it. I'm not sure what it is but my copper gutters are covered in black staining. It's a bummer because they'd be so cool looking without it.

Also, use lead free solder and it won't be a problem.

I'd be more worried about alcohol vapor and open flames than getting busted.

Funny that I've actually seen some proposals to allow personal distillation of alcohol.  Not sure if they will ever go anywhere- but it's not being hidden.  We have talked briefly with a wine maker who wanted to get into making spirits, and his reading of the requirements were far more about the fire risk than the absolute tracking.

Yeah I'd use a lead free solder and silver bearing for strength.

Barefoot my understanding is it's totally illegal but the chances of getting caught and prosecuted are less if you don't sell. This is just a funnel for home brew beer which is totally legal. Lots cheaper than the bigger stainless steel ones.

Very cold here last week, the copper line to the ice maker froze.  Thawed out the first batch of cubes were black, oxidation from the copper line.  I wouldn't do it.

I don't see any way that thing could kill you short of it being propelled at your skull at a high velocity.  If it is indeed solid copper, going after those scratches with steel wool should remove them.

Ebay, huh?  How cheap?  Is it fairly heavy?  Could be a copper or copper-colored coating on some other metal?

Edit:  Drilling a hole through it will definitely give you some useful information. laugh

$8 plus shipping. Think $20ish over all. A stainless funnel the same size would have been $50ish. It is heavy and yeah drilling the hole will at least let me see if it's just copper plated something.

I thought those laws are federal.

I know here in PA, I can do 200 gallons a year for personal use, beer, shine, or other. It's selling it that will get me fined. At least that's what the law said in early 2020 when the governor cut off alcohol sales for a couple weeks till he realized it was $6 million a day the state wasn't getting. I wanted to pickup the slack.

Edit: aha, shine itself is a state to state law.

Although just saw 2 bootleggers get busted after 30 years. The stronger charge was selling to undercover agents, still, fines all around. And fines just mean "legal if you can afford it".

Double edit after looking at Florida law. Stills are illegal, parts that "could be used or adapted to manufacture alcohol" are illegal so I guess you don't have plumbing stores in Florida?, BUT, Florida offers a fuel alcohol permit...

Perhaps you've thought of it already, but assuming the bowl turns out to actually be copper, I'd flare the pipe and/or dimple die the hole in the bowl to get more surface area for a strong soldered joint.
