in the city and bordering suburbs. nothing too ghetto.
Arthur Bryant's was delicious when I stopped there last year for lunch on my way through. I think there is more than one location, but I went to one that was on the rough side of town.
For lunch it isn't a problem, my buddy at work says for dinner they have an armed guard there.
My wife was in KC week before last, and she really enjoy here ribs and burnt ends from Jack Stack. Oklahoma Joe's is also supposed to be outstanding.
AB's and Gates are the two old standards. They are both kind of in the ghetto. They are both worth the trip.
Jack Stack and Zarda are okay, nothing to write home about IMO.
Oklahoma Joe's is what I want for my last meal. Yes, the original location is in a gas station. Get there early. They open at 11:00, there is usually a good line by 10:45. It is worth the wait.
Porky's Blazin BBQ here only open friday to sunday Only cash. Get there early, because once they run out that's it for the day. WAAAAAYYYY better then any chain restaurant.
I just assumed that anybody serving mediocre BBQ in KC would be firebombed by the populace inside of five minutes...
Ive lived about 60 miles from KC for about 8 years now and never been there for the BBQ yet. Im disappoint in myself.
gates bbq has locations in leawood ks (which is like scottsdale az, RICH!) and Independence MO which is safe too. trust me Im from there. I went to an e28.com get together at the location on state ave in kcks and even if I hadnt been CCW I would have felt safe. No problems. Go to Gates.
Oklahoma Joes is still my favorite. Z-Man on Texas toast. Get it and be happy. Get there early. My coworkers and I used to go every Friday. The the place got known and we couldn't eat there during a lunch hour. It's damn good, and worth the wait in line.
Gates & Bryants are classic, and excellent. I now work near both.
Enjoy KC.
