Slefain, do you have the capacity to weld? Find a cheapo steel BMX hub threaded for a freewheel, cut the mounting flange off, and weld it to the axle. Probably could do it for the cost of the cheapest bike at the local goodwill.
Sadly I have neither the talent nor the equipment to weld. I was thinking of grafting a coaster brake assembly to the axle if I can get my hands on an old bike. I think I have an old BMW bike at my parent's house.
My time at the bike shop wasnt all for naught! I forgot about Tricycle Freewheel bolt on hubs.

I dont know what size axle youre working with, but something like that may help. Brakes are another issue...friction brake on the tire tread?
The freewheel adapter shown above has an inside diameter slightly bigger than 9/16". I owned a bike shop for a looong time and these adapters were removed from single speed Miami Sun/Sunlite adult trikes when doing the multi speed upgrade. The trikes were all shipped as single speeds with the multi upgrade (if requested at additional cost) sent along with the trike to be swapped in during assembly. after the upgrade we'd have the adapter & freewheel left over.
I'd be happy to donate an adapter to your project if you go that route. I'll leave the one I measured sitting on my desk. Send me a PM if you want it.
We also sold the Kettler tricycles and pedal cars new. Good products.
