I read this the other day. I thought to myself, I wonder how my good friends on the GRM forum would feel about this?
Higher taxes weave a stronger social fabric
Some genius said: The fact is that it is the responsibility of the State to ensure that all its citizens enjoy a basic standard of living, one with sufficient food, a roof over their head, formal education and their fundamental health needs met.

Your quote is why I disagree. It is one's own responsibility to provide the basic necessities in life. It is the state's responsibility to see to it that no one else takes it from you, be it thug or nation.
That being said, Canada has obviously decided differently and I don't have a problem with that. The USA hasn't made that decision yet, at least not in a open forum. Hell, we haven't even had the discussion. Most of our politicians want to sway things using smoke and mirror tactics. Until they stop, the discussion will never happen. We are ruled by children, led by no one and the rule of law is no longer relevant. We have moved past that to the rule of man. And that is the saddest thing of all.

It can be the job of the state if enough members of the state decide its a good idea.
Good idea creep is where it fails. Health care is a good thing. Government run railroads, not so much.
In reply to Streetwiseguy:
But, having seen how they run a railroad, I don't particularly want them trying to run healthcare.
And to be honest, I'm on the fence about healthcare. I just don't trust our fickle government.

Whichever has a lower 1st gear.
I don't like arguing or confrontation, so here ya go ....

Here's a GRM argument. Can I tow my miata on a trailer with a V6 Toyota Tacoma or do I need something bigger? :-)
Toyman01 wrote:mazdeuce wrote: Manual transmission in a Jeep. Should I or shouldn't I?No. Automatics work better off road than manual transmissions. I'm actually considering swapping the 5 speed in the Samurai to a automatic 4 speed. Better torque control, less abusive to the drive line, better slow speed control. Just better.
Nope. Wrong. You're just not good at driving a manual off road. If you had any skill you'd know that the manual was better.
In reply to Type Q:
When I first built my racecar, I towed my SM with a 2wd 4cyl Toyota Pickup (pre-taco). It did fine on flat land. I bought a bigger truck when I moved to CA and had to tow through mountains. Just give your self plenty of room to go and stop and get trailer brakes.

The torque multiplication allowed by the converter makes it superior to manual in every way for low speed work.

The National Railroad Passenger Corporation, doing business as Amtrak, is a publicly funded railroad service operated and managed as a for-profit corporation and began operations on May 1, 1971, to provide intercity passenger train service in the United States.
We the People are the investors, not the operators.
I like this, this is fun.

No, your wrong, you should drive as fast as possible due to the extra inertia. Just look at semi's on wet roads. 'Murica.

Take the government money out of your, "for profit but hasn't reported a profit in decades," railroad and see what happens. How many millions did they need last year. It's government rail road. Get over it.
They are trying the same thing with healthcare. How do you think that will work.
Wrong in practice trumps wrong in words any day of the week.
Edited for accuracy: Amtrak has never shown a profit and steals closer to a billion a year.

Why the flying berkeley are you driving slow? Just because it's not paved doesn't mean we have to slow down. See, you suck. However, once you start going fast enough that you're consistently leaving the ground then the automatic helps take up the shock loads of landing, so maybe an auto is superior, but for exactly the wrong reasons, which means you're still wrong.
