Yesterday I spent some time chatting with the principal at my kids elementary school and it looks like I'm going to be able to spend two days a week helping kids with their reading starting in the fall. I'm super excited. My youngest is starting full day kindergarten then and I've been trying to figure out what to do with myself. I need to finish a bunch of projects and rebuild the garage but that's not enough work to keep me busy or even particularly satisfied as a human being. I'll still be able to do all of the stay at home dad stuff I need to do and help with something I really believe in. I like it when life works out.

Seriously looking forward to introducing cars to the reading curriculum. In the school I'll be in, I'll only be the third man on a campus of over 900 kids. The other two are a custodian and one of the gym teachers. I'm hoping that a different caring face is what some of these kids need to improve. It's pretty amazing what kids can do when they have someone who cares if they do it or not.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll have to grab that one. My little muffin is not quite 2 and LOVES to "read." We actually went through 5 or 6 books before I went to work this morning. She also LOVES cars. We've read her at least 2 books a day since the day she was born, and the kid has a HUGE vocabulary. Can you tell I'm a proud daddy?

It's astonishing what a leg up reading gives a kid. Come into kindergarten being able to read and everything is easier. So much of school is standardized testing now and if you can read quickly and fluently then you have more time to do the actual answering of questions. Giving your kid the gift of literacy is the best gift you can give them.
