Vegas being what it is, I occasionally get the chance to see Mexican-market vehicles. It's sometimes interesting.
There are a lot of Americans on the "we need a real compact pickup" bandwagon. Some of them want Toyota to sell the Hilux rather than the Tacoma.
I'm here to tell you that the Hilux isn't a compact pickup anymore, either. With the possible exception of width, the Hilux is every bit as big as a current Tacoma.
There goes that idea.
I thought all it was, was a different badge.
It is different than the Tacoma, having a different frame for starters. Size wise though, it's very comparable.
Been a mid-sized truck for about a decade now. There is no smaller model.
Yeah the Hilux hasn't been a compact pickup since they moved to the 7th-gen model. The last two compacts I can think of are the current Frontier and the previous-gen Ford Ranger sold outside the US.
If you want a truly small pickup, globally, you might be stuck with this:
Or this, which I think is rad:

I don't think its the size thats the issue, it's the engine options. The Hilux can be had a with small diesel that probably gets phenomenal mileage versus even a small four cylinder.
Now, if people are importing a Hilux with the same engine as the Tacoma...that's just dumb.
Small pickups? Buy the old ones.
"Extra Cab SR Cab-Chassis diesel has a combined fuel consumption of 8.2L per 100km [G11] (manual)"
Straight from Aussie Toyota
That is 28.7mpgs for a manual with 4WD. Not too shabby. 2WD is only 0.1L/100km better.

Some of us prefer to not see the highway under the truck as we are driving.
for whatever reason we have a newer hilux at work with the turbo diesel in it. no idea why we have it (maybe bought it for competetive testing from a few years ago) but ive seen it driving around town, pretty cool little truck

I'd rock that, but GM says we can't have too many choices in trucks. Big or bigger is all for you USA!
True. That neat little thing would max out hauling just one of us fat berks around.
