Forget Highway 1 with its distracting gorgeous views and its sea of tourists not looking where they are going.

I just found the perfect driving road in California. CA245 is absolutly superb. The perfect blend of tight hairpin turns, a few sweepers, NO traffic, nice road surface, nice weather and no one to bother.

It's on an incline, so if you have something powerful, go direction North, to go uphill, and if you have a Miata (or something similar) go South for downhill.

You can even convince a helpless victim to come with you by telling them you're going to see the Sequoia National Park.

Even in a rental Crown Victoria, I had a blast.

Whenever I see somebody talking about how they don't want autonomous cars because they enjoy driving on the street, I know they're from Germany or California.

point your favorite mapping program to Glendora Ridge Road near Mt Baldy CA. wear a condom, because that road'll make you lose your baby gravy.

Don't forget the Sonora Pass if you like mountain roads.

Or someplace right in the heart of the Appalachians. There's some amazing roads out in SW VA / SE WV / E TN / W NC ....

Check out the roads in the Los Padres National Forest. Do a lap from Mil Potrero -> Cerro Noroeste -> Hwy 33 -> Lockwood Valley Rd.

Is that the one that goes up to the Mt Baldy resort? If it is, I've driven it twice. Once in the snow in a Rabbit GTI, the other time in a blizzard in a 745T wagon. It was scarier than E36 M3! I bet it would be awesome warm and dry though.

Sorry man, but State Highway 193 between Placerville and Cool is the best in Cali.

Lots of elevation change as you plunge down the valley, cross the American River, and climb back up into the Sierra Nevada mountains.

May as well revive this thread.

CA18 from San Bernardino to CA138 at Crestline to either 15 or CA173 is fantastic. I was the only person on CA138 Crestline at 4 pm and it was a fantastic drive. Lots of twisties real tight corners and the road disallows anything over 30 feet so no trucks. The scenery is pretty good too.

The roads are the only thing I miss about California. The Sierra Nevada range has so many nice roads to drive.
