Not job (well, that too), but actual career. I'm paid by professional billable hours (like an attorney). This is my lowest producing month ever in over 2 years at this career. I'm fully Certified in 2 states with the 2nd highest credentials and education that's possible in this field and we (collective, the company, our competitors) are just getting nothing for referrals from the sources (states, insurance companies, self-insured employers). It's not just me/my employer, either. The numbers are just down ~60% for everybody (we can see competing firms totals and rankings).

I would have been better off as a burger-flipper this month.

Berkeleying SUCK!

I should mention that it went dead (like 0 new referrals) for one state from June-September, but even all of the other sources are down 60%. I don't think this industry will survive as a viable career choice. It'll be a fringe thing with a handful of people that did it forever.

You work in the insurance industry? Our company is growing and always needs people, we're nation-wide(and Canada too). PM me if you want details.

In reply to M3Loco:

Sure! But since you already have time in with the government, have you considered looking for a position with the VA? That's what my wife did, and she's nearing her 20-year mark, which means she'll get full retirement when she reaches retirement age. The VA also seems more pro-veteran than other civil-service branches.

I'll already have my 20 year "retirement" from the USAF in January. I've looked at the VA, but want to test the Corporate market first. I'm bi-lingual, clearances, management.. etc..

Man this stuff seems to be popping up everywhere right now. I have been on the hunt for damn near 6 months with very little to show for it. Another member was posting about career issues a few weeks ago. It is a hard market right now. Good Luck Jav.

I'm a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor. (Did you fall asleep?) I'm a Certified Disability Management Specialist as well. I basically case manage injured worker insurance claims. In a nutshell ,I take people that were hurt, figure out their backgrounds, skills, education, etc and determine if they need retraining or updating to re-enter the workforce, and then get the insurer to shell out for that retraining. I can also get them back to work with their original employers and access a ton of state programs for worksite modifications and other disability aid.

It's sort of interesting. I've had gruesome injury people retrain and really take off with new careers, which is great. Unfortunately, I think about 40% of my clients are either faking it or milking the system for every last penny (and they take up 90% of my work day). I have to be an impartial 3rd party on the worker's side though, so I can't do anything about the vast majority of them.

For engineers or people with mechanical/design backgrounds.

I'm thinking of using unemployment to go back to school for industrial electrical maintenance or something.

My dumb butt dropped out of Engineering in college to enlist in the military post-9/11. To be fair, there were over 1,000 people in my Drafting 101 class (at UC berking F!) and I don't want to live in Michigan.

You wanted an alternative, so I posted one.

There are also a ton of other job openings in Michigan- even the big 3- there are a ton of listings for non engineering positions. If you choose to not change, well, that's your choice.

Well, if you are going back to school, there's a significant shortage of engineers.

And pay is good.

this is true pay is quite good. Job satisfaction so far for me isn't the best but can't complain about compensation (Well I can but not with any decent justification).

Just here in Michigan- http://careers.gm.com/#.html , http://www.chryslercareers.com/Pages/default.aspx, and http://corporate.ford.com/careers?&ccode=US

and that does not include everyone else around here who are hiring.

you are welcome.

Well, better than not working (for some) or being even more pissed off about your job.

nobody is happy working, it seems. But people buy cars.

A juicy alternative to be sure, but for someone that already has a BA in a completely unrelated field it doesn't make much sense. Unless your HR department is hiring...

I'm more of a TV news program talking-head pundit. I've worked on them enough to know the mistakes the engineers made (and the ones the accountants made). So James May basically.

Javelin,

Does that qualify you to weed out the good engineers from the hacks?

That might be very useful to HR for the Engineering Dep't at one of the auto companies.

I'd vote for more Clarkson with enough of James May's knowledge to be scary.

you really want a carreer change? You can go back to school. Plenty of jobs in various science fields- if you don't want to leave- find a way to be a computer person- programer, engineer, systems- whatever. MS has to hire people from overseas and put them in Canada.
