Thank God for yeast, then. Turns the sugars that are bad for you into something you can enjoy!

So you guys joking about scientific experimentation got me thinking. I will try different liquors and see how they affect me. First step is excluding grains totally and trying rum. For experimentation purposes I'll describe last nights reaction as medium. It defiantly wasn't as bad as some of the reactions I've had.

Experimentation is actually a good idea.
If you've got an all-corn whiskey (Mellow Corn) that could be an interesting variable. Weller and Makers are wheated bourbons and shouldn't have rye. Then malt whiskies. Irish whisky shouldn't have rye in it.

I'm used to dealing with malted grains. Water content is sufficiently low to not have those concerns. Most of our distilling is rum from turbinado sugar.

Make 2nd drink a double and see if your body can keep up with the math. Again, for science.
Oops
Accidentally had two Black Russians, no effect.
Need to get more whiskey.
Just tried a Bells Two Hearted. Decanted, starting to get a little stuffy.

Naw because that would be illegal and E36 M3 .
Tonight's experiment is brought to you by Flor de Caña Extra Seco 4 year rum. I'm on the third (had too for science) and no reaction.
I Love bourbon.
I had to stop drinking it. I would almost immediately get hiccups and heartburn. I didn't make the connection at first with the heartburn and had to go on prilosec. Now that I stopped drinking it, no heartburn.

What are you drinking now?
Mostly Bravus NA stouts with some Guinness mixed in here and there.

Do you like Bravus?
The wife is intrigued with the peanut butter stout because it's gluten free. Non alcoholic is meh but afaik there isn't another stout like it gluten free
Maybe go into the second drink knowing, in your deepest heart of hearts, that you're not going to have a reaction. 50% kidding but I would think that if it only happens on the second drink, some of it may be self-imposed.
If you're allergic to the second and not the first or third, maybe you've got something else going on and noticed the stuffies on the second drink once and that bug stuck. Maybe on your second drink of rye you typically reach for the pistachios and you're actually allergic to pistacios but once you're stuffy and go for your third drink the pistachios are no longer appealing. Maybe the end of your first rum doesn't trigger your mind to want pistachios so you don't encounter the stuffies.
Again, 50% kidding but that means I'm also 50% serious.
EDIT: Also, maybe you're allergic to rye.
I've been in whiskeys for a little while, never had a reaction like that. Spicy food can get my snot flowing bad though, could be similar with how harsh rye can be.
Been shaking some things up recently. Fell in love with mezcal, love the smoky terra Cotta goodness. Never liked tequila on its own (margarita, ohh yeah), but the mezcal I sip straight up no rocks. Might be something to try of you are looking for alternatives.

Montelobos is pretty tasty if you can find it. I have no idea what their distribution is like.
Rye whiskey makes some people want to fight, in a way that the same amount of rum does not.
I've seen it a few times.

I have that allergic reaction to Jagermeister. Lucky for me and those around me I identified that in my early 20s and have avoided it since.

Maybe my first is so big a double wouldn't fit in the glass?

Wow good luck avoiding corn syrup. And good for you, that E36 M3 is not good for you.
We have been fairly successfully avoiding corn syrup for years. We consume almost zero pre-packaged food, that tends to get rid of most of it. No pop, nothing sweetened unless it's with sugar. Staying non-gmo helps to avoid it, too.
I mostly drink rye, also to avoid corn products, but also because bourbon is too sweet for my tastes.
