Bang for the buck, I really like my Alvarez. I forget the model, but its a cutout, 2-piece top, pickup. Got it new for $275 with an inexpensive gig bag. Action is great, bulletproof tuning, and it has held up well for 10+ years.
My pro friend used it once to gig and she remarked that it was 85% as good as her Ibanez for 20% as much money. Good midrange, great bass. Highs are a little weak, but its a pretty big cavern.
