At my work we are expanding our manufacturing into a section of our building that had a tire warehouse in it for 15ish years.

When we walk around on the floor our shoes squeak and there is the (awesome) smell of new tires everywhere - even though there's no more tireage now.

What ideas or direct experience does anyone have for "cleaning" the floors so they don't squeak? I'm assuming that if we make the squeak go away the smell of the new tires will leave at the same time.

Get rid of the new tire smell?!  That would be like asking a trio of beautiful, naked women to leave your bedroom.

I grew up in a family tire business.  That new tire smell is something I have never forgotten 40 years later.

I got to admit I like the smell  but never equated it with naked women prancing around my bedroom.

The squeaky floor may just be a high friction coating on the concrete.

That's kind of like asking how to get rid of an oil stain in the driveway, it is possible, but its damned hard to completely do it.

Easiest way in a place that size would probably be to resurface the floor

I work in a pretty large dealership that stocks a few hundred tires. We also have concrete floors, and they squeak around the tires. I'm assuming there's a layer of rubber (or whatever mold release agent they use) on the floor causing both of your issues. The squeaking drives me crazy too! No solution though, sorry.
Maybe a concrete polish?

Not sure it's the rubber. Every manufacturing facility I've worked in, the concrete on the "floor" (ie the production floor not the offices/cubicles) have been squeaky. And none of them were a tire warehouse previously.

In other words, I have no useful advice for you. laugh

It's not that one reminds me in any way of the other.  I was simply questioning the OP's intention of getting rid of something desirable. laugh

It occurs to me that if you really wanted to quiet down the floor, you could spread a few pounds of baby powder on it.  That would almost surely eliminate the squeaking, but would likely make the floor dangerously slippery.

In reply to z31maniac :

I'm pretty sure the squeak is tire-related. We're already in 1/2 of the same building with our CNC and stamping operations and we're squeak free.

It only happens around our tire storage area too.
It's related.

If it's related to the tire storage then just wait awhile. The floor should stop squeaking.

I'd be willing to bet the squeak will disappear from the high traffic areas pretty quickly.  The smell will have permeated everything, and getting rid of it completely will be very difficult.

A power sweeper and that green powder/sweeping additive/dust control/whatever the hell it is might speed up the squeak removal.

Or dance wax...Might make for some slick corners, but it could be fun.

The smell of new tires is actually the smell of the mold release. I would think these days it is all silicone products.

So some sort of degreaser/solvent that will cut silicone? Mopping the floor with it should stop the squeaking.
