I'm six weeks shy of 18 years since I've worked at a job. Four kids at home, very successful wife, story old as time. The longer the kids have been in school the more restless I've been getting. Recently I was talking to a friend about work and he mentioned that they may need some help in the shop where they do industrial mechanic work. I mentioned that I still need to be there to drop off and pick up kids and be home when they're on break and all of that jazz. He said he thought they could work around that if I was cheap enough. Considering I've been working for $0 an hour for 18 years, I said I was cheap enough.
So in an hour I leave for work. Kind of freaking out.
Congrats. The best kind of work is when you don't 'need' to do it. Have fun and please book Ferdinand into this shop so we can follow along as you pay to work on your own vehicle!

Remember to be smarter than your tools, and wear clean underwear.
Good luck!

Thanks. And yes, don't "need" to do it, but with two kids starting college next year, it will help stem the massive outflow of money, if just a little.

Thanks. Bought a new pair of pants. Brown ones. Just in case things catch me off guard.
If you go commando you underwear will always stay clean.
We all know this is just so you can come up with enough extra cash for a Dakar Malle Moto entry.

What glimpses we see of your parenting and based on results, I would say your parenting paid off a hell of a lot more than $0/hr.

Good luck on your first day, and be safe!
Childcare is expensive. You've been making way more than $0/hr these 18 years!
Good luck, dude! Hope it's a good first day.
Cool!
While my kids are little, my wife and I are working alternating 3-day a week schedules. It's tough at times but totally amazing, then again I don't think I would still be sane if I was home with the kids every day. Well, as sane as I am at least.
I hope you enjoy your first day of work.
Industrial mechanic work sounds like a great way to make contacts that might be able to fabricate car parts for you.

I can confirm this 100% from the two deucelings we were fortunate enough to meet.
And good luck Seth! Though I don't see any reason to worry. Well, other than getting loose fleshy things too close to moving metal things.

Indeed. We just started bluekid at daycare, and at $340/week, know that we're getting a good value for the DC area. It's basically $20k/yr, so Seth, you've been at least in the $80k/yr range from since deucekid quattro joined you till the prototype deuceling left for college.
Here on the west coast, monthly, $2300 for kid 2, and $1800 for kid 1. Older they get, the cheaper they get. This was after 3 year of waiting list, for the nearest day care. SIGH>
My cousin in heart of Tokyo, where all meals are cooked on site for kids, etc, pays $1100 a month for his kid.
So...... Are you ready for a day off yet?
I'm entering the opposite side of the spectrum. I've started counting the months I have left to work.
29 months.
But who's counting?

I left at 3:00 just like I said I would even though the kids both have afterschool things and I could have stayed a bit longer. I'm gong to keep the schedule very solid for at least a couple of weeks before I even hint that there may be some days that I can stay later. The good thing is that my boss is one of the guys I race motorcycles with. He's met my kids, my whole family actually, and he's helped me get some work done on kid#3's bike when I was healing from the collarbone thing. He's a good guy.
So I had fun. Took apart two and a half pumps (the third one is being grumpy) painted another one that had been put together, used the floor cleaner to spiff up the place, started organizing the big tool box. Generally made myself useful and had a fairly great day. I'm going back agian tomorrow.
Thanks for your words of support everyone.

Excellent you were able to put your training as a house husband to use on your first day. They're not going to know what hit them.
