Couldn't have been anything else. Never experienced that before, it's quite a weird sensation. Mrs. Twin_Cam just called to say that they evacuated their building at work because stuff was falling off shelves. This isn't Kaleefornia, why are we getting earthquakes?!
The cat is nowhere to be found. Seems he was a little shaken up by it too.
Sorry... I had chili for lunch. It should be ok now.
Supposedly it was a 5.8...
Prelim 5.8 Earthquake epicenter about 34 miles NW of Richmond, VA. 87 miles SW of DC. Begin felt as far north as #NYC and New Jersey.
Felt it here in NC, it was small but it was my first rodeo. I thought the guys downstairs were playing a joke on me and making the loft rock, as it is less than stable anyway, but nope. It was ma nature. Weird.
Apparently, whatever it was, you could feel it here in SE MI, too. I was walking, and didn't feel it- but I've heard quite a few here in my building mention the earthquake.
My co-worker in NC said he felt it.

weird, I am in greenville and did not. I would love to, though.

Thats what felt strange while ago. Was wondering why the "seating surface" felt as though it moved.
that certainly was strange, it even awoke our cat. She got up look around and switched positions, and that NEVER happens...
I don't get spooked by too many things but this freaked me out. I'm sure you guys in Cali are laughing at this but it's a new experience for me in NJ.
Holy crap, the whole North American continent. Badass!
In Pottstown, PA and felt my house vibrate, I imagine if I was sitting in the other room on carpet, I wouldn't have felt it.
Why? because the gods are displeased. I'm hearing a lot about it. Glad to hear your internets are still operable.
I love what social media has become.
The earthquake already has it's own tumblr.

Yep, I'm at work about 60 miles west of Philadelphia, PA. On the 5th floor of a 5 story building. Definitely felt it. Nothing fell off shelves or anything, but it was a nice swaying and shaking sensation. Felt very similar to turbulance on an airplane. First time in my life I've ever felt one when I wasn't flying. Quite the sensation...

I'm in Frederick, MD about 50 miles north of DC and 50 miles south of Twin_Cam.
Didn't feel anything and all 3 cats slept right thru it!!
EDIT: at 2:40 the mailman came by and asked me if I had felt it. He said he had gotten a text message from his GF in Hagerstown about it. He had been out walking his rounds and did not feel it either.
The USGS seems to have already corrected it to 5.9.
And if you want to report you felt it- http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/dyfi/events/us/c0005ild/us/index.html
And here I just thought it was good drugs.
Now I want my money back
Well, the reason you're experiencing an earthquake has to do with how the crust of the earth is made. ..... see there's these moving plates and stuff, but no cups or saucers. They move and stuff.....
I was on the road in a stiffly sprung BMW... I thought it was a bumpy road
One time several years back when I felt a small one in MO, I quickly realized that there are very few things I considered to be "given" in life. Until that moment, one of those things was that the ground didn't move. It's quite an awakening when that is proven wrong by surprise.
I guess I'm saying, I understand it feels weird to be "out of control" when any amount of earthquake hits an area that normally doesn't experience it.

We've had a few decent ones here in Central IN in the last 10 years or so. One 6.4 thta was 1 mile from my house at the time and the last one was a 6.1 that was about 11 miles north of us. It's always disconcerting to realize that the ground isn't as stable as you once thought!
