Why do I feel like a child who just got a talking to in front of the whole class for picking boogers?
With very few exceptions I stay out of the smart poeple threads. But with every other thread getting locked I feel like I'm dodgeing ass chewings.
I don't want to see this place go away. I hope we don't become such a headache that it's easier just to shut it down.
I have a pretty simple rule about most posts I make, and that's don't say something here that I won't say in person. That's why I use my real name here. I am not here to represent myself any differently than I do in person.
With that said, I mostly stay out of political threads, unless it's something that hits close to home. I take time to make a good, mostly unoffensive post. I personally feel that some of the behavior I see on this forum is rather immature, especially in the now unspoken threads. I truly don't think that many people here take the time to make an attempt at being civil.
I guess I was brought up in a family with too much arguing, so I try to avoid it as much as possible, especially online. Arguing with people here is like racing Uluru. You may run your mouth at a thousand words a second, but you're not changing the minds of anyone, and you look a little foolish that you're trying to race against something that isn't changing.
Don't make political or religious posts, and don't call other people names...it's that simple. There are a half dozen members who usually start them (that's just a guess, I haven't counted); just avoid responding to their posts.

^ This, I quit posting when the name calling started.

Lately that's not always the case. I had one deleted for a funny Tshirt picture that didn't poke fun at any one group.
I didn't look that closely at the picture, maybe there were boogers involved and that's why it was pulled.

In my experience i'd actually say quite the opposite, that despite some fairly radically opposed opinons sometimes strongly presented grm maintains one of the MOST mature and civil forums i've come across.

The tshirt was very political. I'm not sure how you would have missed that...

Yeah. Something like that.

This. This forum is one of the most civil forums I have ever been on.
I've said it before. This is consistently the most argumentative forum I've ever been on.
you can be argumentive and still civil. Just seems there are a few people here who go too far.
The big problem is.. this is an election year.. and the BIG election year. It tends to heat people's blood a bit as they line up behind their candidates. Things will be better after the election when we all remember how screwed we are

Political only in the aspect that it poked fun at the whole political process.
And it did it in a funny way. And it wasn't offensive or hurtful in any way. Many other threads had been going and have been introduced since then that were worse.

Politics is a sacred cow for for some folks.

I agree. How do we get that into the heads of those that need it so everyone can keep enjoying the best off topic forum I've ever seen.
One could come here with the most off the wall request or question and 9.99 out of 10 times someone knows or has done it.
I know some feel that once the elections over with it'll calm down again. I'm just not sure I"ve seen it this bad. I've read almost every post since we switched over from the old board.

thing is, they're not smart people threads. smart people don't argue politics in public. all that does is lead to angry people trying to change minds they can't change, and it all devolves from there.

I agreed with it and felt it was political and would likely start a fight.
Here isn't as bad as some forums. Generally civil but sometimes gets out of hand. I just stay away from anything I think could get out of hand. We all have opinions and we are entitled to express them in the proper place/format but sometimes it is best to keep that opinion to ones self.
After all, I respectively reserve the right to politely disagree with you.

While the signal to noise ratio here is quite good, I still stand by exactly what I said. You really don't want to know the silliness I have to deal with on another forum.
How about, instead of locking threads, we just push the troll to the edge of the villiage and not let him back in?
Miserable user status is something that should be implemented with the board revision. It works.
I don't touch political threads with a ten foot pole. I don't even have a ten foot pole, but I usually buy a ten foot pole just so I can not touch them with it.
I treat this as a car forum. Weird, huh? It's a place to get away from politics for me.
